so i've just recently gotten into T2 and i'm trying to decide on a shield to upgrade up to T3. It seems that many people like the owlite series and the fire defense sounds useful for FSC. I also wanted to know how the volcanic plate or omega shell compared to the owlite. I currently have a bristling buckler but from what i've heard there aren't a lot of enemies that do piercing damage so i'd like some help picking a new shield :)
Good shields?
FSC is the easiest T3 stratum out, if you are just patient in avoiding fire traps and slag walkers breath then it would be worth saving the otherwise money spent on an owlite.
Stick with BB shield where it will serve you well in those odd times you decide to join a wolver stratum.
Also the increased damage is very nice for all swords.
However, if you're really getting bogged down by fire in FSC, then by all means get a owlite or volcanic plate shield.
Owlite is better.
Bristling buckler is okay for the bonus (only swords, huh), but piercing defense is silly since nothing actually deals it... as for things that do deal piercing, a piercing shield doesn't really have an advantage over them. Examples:
Alpha Wolvers: I have yet to see any shield not break after the first bite.
Jellies: They're easy enough to dodge, and the only times you get hit are when you're in a swing animation and you don't notice them planting swikes beneath your feet--even then you don't have time to put up a shield anyway.
Things that deal elemental damage that you want to protect against:
Gun Puppies: so many bullets, missiles, flamethrowers.. any other shield would wilt and break
Mecha Knights: their charge attacks could be devastating if you haven't got an elemental shield.
and anything else that spams bullets or walls of fire. Also, elemental is more common in T3 anyway.
Get Owlite or Volcanic Plate.
All kidding aside, I'd recommend:
Owlite or BB series to start. I tend toward the former, because elemental is what you'll hate the most in T3. But you can't dismiss damage bonus that easily.
Your second shield can be the one you didn't choose previously; or, if you want to dig into fiend strata, you may want a Skelly Shield or Crest of Almire. I would advise skipping the Skelly Shield if possible, as Crest is much better. In which case, if your first shield was BB, you'll probably want Owlite next, as it makes the Vanadork fight easier.
Volcanic Plate is more of a shield tailor-made for the final Vanadork fight, so you probably don't want that as your first shield. But as with any game advice, the best thing to do is to throw it out the window and pick what you think will be the most fun.
@unicorn
ironmight plate shield. thats all im gonna say. (i got this as my first shield cuz i didnt understand the status effects on shields properly. I was building vog so i figured "ehh i dont need fire res. ill take ironmight over volcanic".)
In reality. you want the volcanic. Dont bother with ironmight. (yet)
I would get the defender series.
I dont know bout you guys, but it has served me well for the past 2 weeks or so. recently unbinded it and sold it off. got a stone tortoise now. Stone tortoise is also a fairly good shield (4*)
Stone Tortoise is arguably one of the worst shields you can get. Sure it has a ton of health and normal defense, but that health means very little if you don't have additional defense against the special type you're going up against. The only reason it used to be popular was because it had no prereqs; you could buy a recipe and make it right away. It is marginally better at defending against attacks of all types, but that really doesn't cut it, considering Owlite is vastly superior against elemental, shock and fire, and the Snarborlax shield series gives a sword damage boost.
Defender series is passable but rather lacklustre; it provides no special bonuses or additional status defense. If you wanted a normal/piercing shield, use the Snarborlax shield series, which is only slightly weaker but more than makes up for it in the sword damage bonus. Still, the 5* version looks cool.
But to each their own, as long as people are clear on the pros and cons. If you are dead set on a Royal Jelly Shield, it's not my business to stop you or say you're wrong. =P (BTW, RJ shield does look pretty cool)
upgrade your BB to 5* it'll be a nice shield for T3 beast or jelly strata.
owlite is definitely good
volcanic plate is a good alternative for FSC.
In T3 the key is not to have a good shield, but a good shield for the stratum, which might necessitate 2 or 3 shields !!!
