Frankly, that sort of problem crops in within the US, too. Three Rings basically dodges responsibility, correctly noting that the problem could be in a variety of places, but the consistency with which I get lag problems playing Spiral Knights and the scarcity of lag problems with other online games combined with the routine complaints I see about lag in Spiral Knights suggests that they really do have some server issues that they need to address.
Obscene lag
The frameskipping y'all are talkin' about is caused by memory leaks in the game client. Much like an old windows PC, the longer you leave it running the more memory it consumes and doesn't give back. The only way to free up the memory is to completely close the game client. You can then reopen it and continue playing. I make a habit now of always restarting my game client before IMF runs for exactly this reason, and it's completely solved nearly all the issues I used to have in there.
As a note, this WILL happen no matter how good of a computer you have. It's simply a question of how long you'll be able to keep the client open before it starts to affect you.
Jigokunoinu: That's a lot better than I get here in Canada. If we're both seeing the same problems, then I would suppose that it is indeed on Three Rings' end, or as Toksyuryel suggests, a different sort of problem altogether.
When you refer to framskipping, Toksyuryel, are you talking about the gaps when the screen freezes?
That is only half the problem here. Quite often I have seamless video, but my knight is running on the spot or teleporting into brambles.
I've kept an eye on my system's memory usage during play, and it really isn't anything out of the ordinary. There are no spikes, no hikes, nothing's backing me up.
Network usage goes wonky sometimes, though.
Someone has to fix this lag. It's getting out of control.
Yeah there's both lag and frameskipping going on. People in the thread were trying to include the frameskipping in the lag instead of as a separate problem so I was clearing up that confusion. There is definitely still some pretty serious lag sometimes, like what happened to my party last night. Sorry if I only added to the confusion instead of reducing it.
Good call, Toksyuryel.
I'm still hoping for a fix to the lag problem. Maybe if I tried putting my router upside-down? :/
Well, apparently, judging from the SK's fanbase opinions, there is absolutely no lag and it's just an excuse for sucking and crying in the forums
Actually, many of us are experiencing some terrible lag. I got disconnected on the Roarmulus floor, and of course couldn't rejoin my party because it's a boss floor. That hurt.
It's very frustrating to die a bunch during arenas, too. And embarrassing to be flat on the floor in Tier One. :/
"Three Rings has no control over the 'lag', "
Yes, with the current setup, they have no control over the lag, but that is just because of how they set it up.
They have it run on cloud computers so data continually needs to go between them (If what others say is true) so they can get some of the cheapest servers, and they have everything done server side to prevent people from hacking and making the game easy for them (and getting CE for free), if you want to move, that has to happen on the server, if you want to raise a shield that must be done on the server, etc, etc, which only adds to server load, and requires you to do an action before the round trip occurs (i.e. monster goes to attack, data sent to you, you see and shield, data goes back to server, but before it gets there you have been hit) or else suffer.
This is only a problem with SK, I do not get this problem with other games I play, except once when I was torrenting playing CS). It is mainly OOO fault. Yes, a tiny bit is caused by the latency, however the design of the game is the core problem. A well designed game would not do this.
OOO is too concerned with making money and making sure people don't hack, than people actually having fun and enjoying the game.

See, once people start hacking the game, everyone stops having fun. See: Everything Blizzard has said about Diablo III. That is very strongly on the side of things that Three Rings is doing to keep people having fun.
And cloud servers make good sense.
As for your accusation about them wanting to make money... Uh. I dunno. That's the way the world works?
Currently some hacks are actully working.I will not post a link but people are now hacking for a lot of crowns and CE.I am mad at them because they won't do it legibly like the rest of us.

Both of those state my connection is just fine, I know my connection is just fine, my computer is fine as I blow the recommended equip requirements out the water, shoot even my wife's 3 yr old laptop should perform fine, yet it doesn't. The issues are most certainly on OOO side, i'm only about 800 miles or so from LA, I live in Portland,OR so can't say it's the distance issue either. If my lag is as bad as it is, then I truly feel sorry for those who don't have a connection as good as mine or are in another country.
@shadowsgt: i live in japan and have a standard (not bad, not out of this world awesome) connection. i have one bar of connection half the time, and two bars the other half of the time. the game ranges between "only irritatingly sluggish" and "actually unplayable, guess i will go do something else".
What are the symptoms, ShadowSgt? Does it freeze for a second every few seconds? Does your knight bounce around the screen, or teleport? Are there times when you can walk around but all the other knights and monsters stand dormant?
You're right, it's very odd that you'd be seeing any lag with a connection like that.
Sorry, Obvobvobv, I think you're just outside their demographic. Best of luck, though.
Edit: Not demographic so much as geographic.
yeah, i'm going to try out port forwarding when i get home. i sincerely wish OOO would give server issues more consideration than they currently appear (not) to. :D nice puns
Can we just let this thread die or graveyard it?
It is simple. Server in other country = lag.
For me, pingtest to San Francisco, 0% packet loss, ping 198ms, jitter 1ms, distance to server 7100 miles ...
If I wasn't enjoying the game so much I'd simply quit. Using guns is near impossible, need to shield *before* the coloured attack circle appears, single swipe and run tactics with swords are out (must have knockback; recently got destroyed by jellies in the palace while using a Nightblade ...), dodging projectiles is a lesson in frustration (they are *at least* one square further forward than they appear ...).
The list goes on but everyone who plays outside of the US knows them all already ...
