I'm not exactly an expert on statuses and resistance and all that... So I'm wondering if it would be worth it to set yourself on fire with a Fang of Vog and wear elemental defense gear so it spreads to other monsters without hurting you too much. Also, does status resist prevent the status from happening or does it lower the damage taken?

Currently, fire doens't seem to be spreading like that - I own and use a Fang of Vog and constantly get lit on fire, but I have never managed to spread it to enemy mobs. Besides, fire is quite weak - It wouldn't be worth doing something as crazy as that. (Even less when you can use bombs and the such)
And note - Elemental defense won't decrease damage taken much (...I have never actually tested this), it's mainly the fire resistance that does that. Also remember that Fang of Vog is literally the hardest item to obtain at the moment, excluding the unobtainable items. AFAIK, only three players (including myself) own it.
Status effect resist doens't seem to affect the overall chance of getting inflicted by that - It reduces the time it lasts and how strong it is. So in Fire's case, it'd reduce the damage and duration. Stun resist on the other hand, would reduce the time and how slowed you get by stun.
