If you're blocking a ton of

If you're blocking a ton of incoming damage the shield of the corresponding damage type is better: BTS vs. piercing, GOS vs. elemental.
If you shields never in danger of breaking, and you use a sword: BTS.
If you use bombs or guns: GOS.
In most of t3 and IMF: GOS.

In my experience in using the

In my experience in using the BTS I've almost never had it break in a single attack, with the exception being Vana's mace in which case it breaks but I only receive status conditions which then I usually remedy capsule away, and this is all I really ask for in a shield. But that is because I much prefer dodging to blocking for prolonged periods.

So really, if you're good at dodging, swordplay, and especially shield canceling (essential for dodging some attacks fast enough) then use the BTS. If you feel you still can't get out of the way fast enough then use the GOS.
