should i get a sword instead??
is magma driver a good gun, is it useful overall or...
Magma Driver's got the highest DPS out of the status alchemers as fire always does higher damage than shock; it lacks crowd control and won't work on almost every enemy in Firestorm Citadel. That said, the penalty for using fire on a fire-type enemy is usually just that it won't cause the fire status, so it's not unbearable.
Basically, the status alchemers:
Best DPS: Magma Driver (Outside FSC/fire strata)
Best Crowd Control: Hail Driver (Outside freeze strata)
And Storm Driver is the middleman, having moderate crowd control and bonus dps (Outside shock strata)
Anyways, there's nothing about the magma driver that makes it unusable, just never fire it at Oilers (The lichen that set on fire)
As a suggestion, if you're choosing between magma driver or a sword - you generally always want to carry a sword with you in the clockworks, but you have two weapon slots for a reason. You probably want to get your sword to 4* first, as 3* and below gear is nerfed considerably in tier 3, but there's nothing stopping you from eventually getting both a sword and a gun of your choice.
"But guns in general don't match up damage to swords."
This is just true if you use an Alchemer... They are pretty weak guns in my eye.
Polaris: much much way higher element damage than all alchemers. I know often said you will get dislikes from your party members, well only if you just spam it in somewhere... There are allways mobs at different spots, attack these where your friends don't fight, or attack them from closer so you wont splash them too much, even then with 3 shots more damage than the alchemer. Also great for sniping Gun Puppies!
The alchemer shot is faster than the Polaris, but the Polaris has 3 shots per clip, alchemer 2, also deals ø50% more damage per bullet and has a huge splash (multiple targets = 200% dmg, 300% dmg, ....)

... they're pretty good single target damage. But guns in general don't match up damage to swords.
I highly disagree with ShideKnight. Alchemers shine in their ricochet bullets hitting up to multiple enemies if you know how to use it; though the ricochet effect is quite random. It's a good gun for kiting and handling puppies fast.
I should of specified.
Of course alchemers can cause lots of damage if you learn to use the richochets well. But you can't always do that and it also takes skill, which I am not sure people are gonna want to worry about unless they are using guns as thier main weapon. Actualy this also goes for the other comment too: generaly means generaly. It does not mean there are not exceptions. I had noticed when I was still also using a sword that my sword would always outdamage my guns.
Get whatever you want to use.
People do use magma drivers; they're pretty good single target damage. But guns in general don't match up damage to swords.
