Steam Overlay malfunction

I have not been able to start the game from Steam without disabling the Steam Overlay UI (seems like it's unique to my computer - running windows 7 64x).
I've tried a steam support ticket already, with the response pointing to a failed solution that I've tried all too many times (disabling Anti-viruses etc.)...

Is there a way to start SK by itself from it's installation folder? As of now it's the only way for steam overlay to work without having both the game I want to start as well as the overlay to both not start (not crash)? (it worked for portal 2 and it's own execution file)

You can try the instructions

You can try the instructions here to get up to date Java files that my not have a conflict with the Overlay.

I don't have any confirmation on this succeeding yet. So far it's just another troubleshooting step.

Did you add SK as a non-steam

Did you add SK as a non-steam game or replaced the java_vm files from someplace else? Its known that the steam overlay will not work with 64-bit binaries for java.

As for the game itself, it launches from javaw.exe with a switch pointing to the jar, so you need a specially crafted shortcut for it to work. You can still use the java_vm included with the steam dist, just change the target to that location.

Normal Install -
Target: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre6\bin\javaw.exe" -jar getdown-pro.jar . (note that the period at the end is important)
Start in: (Path to Spiral Knight's install location)

If you start the game through any means other then Steam, the Steam login option will NOT be available.

2 tests...Nada

@ starlinvf: it's from the default installation from steam, so it may not be it...and ya, no steam login with that solution

@ d0gr0ck: nothing either (it's identical to before copying the files over...ironically enough)

btw, (saying it again) this game isn't the only game having problems launching from steam with the overlay switched on...(for me at least)

Could be a video driver issue

Could be a video driver issue or a corrupted steam dll in steam.

Some utilities with on-screen display (Rivatuner & After Burner in particular) can interfere with the overlay.

...wait. did this start right after the steam client update?

clean installation

Nope, I first installed steam on this computer about 3 months ago (some time after portal 2 came out). I'm making some progress reading the second link as it has some of the same issues as I do...

*10 minutes and 12 pages later*

...no progress still...

clear out the overlay log,

clear out the overlay log, then launch spiral knights and quit. Then post the contents of the log to pastebin.com and post the link to it back here.

hunoring thing

when the steam overlay is enabled for SK, only java shows up (for 5 seconds) in the task manager, no overlay, no logs written, nothing.

Does anything show up in the Projectx.log in the main SK folder? Or even hs_errPID####.log files?

nope. Like I said nothing was

nope. Like I said nothing was updated or show up at all.

but oddly enough, my laptop (a Lenovo x200 series running windows 7) starts SK w/ overlay properly. So I have no idea where within my desktop copy of windows 7 have a problem...the Nvidia driver (note that it's been updated between attempts as well), or some driver (my motherboard is 2 years out of date, stupid ASUS for not updating it for Windows 7)...

If it still works in other

If it still works in other games, I'm gonna say its something wrong with the SK install. If you haven't, do a full scan and see if it finds anything wrong.

Or you could just remove the game, delete whats left over, and reinstall. (Won't affect your characters.... at worst your key binds)

the point here is that the games that I have installed only ran with the overlay enabled when launched from their core execution files (ie. for portal - hf2.exe)

That doesn't really make

That doesn't really make sense then. Source games require steam to run, and will either refuse to launch or will actually launch steam for you if you use the main executable.

I'm at a complete loss on this one. If it is some kind of registry problem, I wouldn't know where to start for something like this.
