Nerf fiends

Fiends as they are are ridiculous. They attack so quickly that if you shield when their attack indicator flashes, your shield isn't up by the time the attack hits. They hit for a ton of damage (as much as plenty of melee mobs) and inflict debilitating status effects. On top of that, they're really hard to hit. Everyone I know consciously avoids fiend levels.

If they are going to continue to be quick ranged attackers, they should do much less damage in their normal form and probably not deal status effects unless super-charged. Right now, they're the downer of every run.

The thing with Fiends...

Well you see, the thing with fiends are that they actually take a certain kind of strategy to defeat. Hardmode game is hard, I know, but just hear me out.

To defeat fiends, you have to fight them at a distance instead of locking yourself in a sword-swinging-combo, allowing any one of them to pelt your face with an empty soda cup for half your maximum health. That's right, guns are actually useful now :D

Fiends MUST be picked off one by one. They're actually like tiny versions of marines; they fight tactically in numbers and will find your blind spots. Keep them together and distance yourself with them and you'll beat them in a fire-fight, or you can lead them into bombs.

Long story short; don't use swords to kill Fiends.

My way.

I charge up and release them. But they are still very easy and when I get a snarby barb I will have no problems killing the fiends.

"Everyone I know consciously

"Everyone I know consciously avoids fiend levels."

You know why they're terrible at them? Because they don't know how to fight them, which is, in turn, because they haven't done it enough to learn how.

That said, there's a huge difference between devilites, greavers, trojans, and wings, even though all four are categorized as fiends. I'd like to see the unblockable conditions that greavers can leave on the ground get nerfed (by making them very brief and blockable), but the rest are fine.

Crystal bomb

I have yet to see an "X enemy is overpowered" thread where I can't just walk in and say "These guys are pathetic if you have crystal bomb".

These guys are pathetic if you have Radiant Sun Shards. All fiends are, actually.

@ Gerry: charging your attacks vs fiends isn't very bright idea, speaking of Devilites and Greavers. They are too quick and you're risking getting yourself hurt. Kats are quick too, they tend to move out of your range just before your charged attack is realeased :D Been there.

@ the OP: I find fiends OK, but I must admit I DO hate it when I have to fight them in a tiny place (as in 'Dark City - Sinful Steps' etc.). When there is enough room to maneuver and pick them one-by-one, they aren't THAT hard.
I also hate the kind of Devilites that inflict the Shock status... those are nasty killers :D

Protip:

Fiends stop their attack animation the second they receive any active damage (bullets, slashes, explosions).

Reavers: wait for them to dive you, then slash them before they finish their bite and they'll stop attacking.

The issue with devilites is

The issue with devilites is simply that their warning animation before they attack is shorter than the combination of lag plus the time it takes to raise a shield. Adding half a second to the warning frames would make a big difference; no monster's warning animation should be so short that the player can't respond in time, else there's no point for the warning animation to even exist.

While I've learnt how to fight them myself, this has to be a major frustration for a large amount of players that post complaint threads about them. The key issue is that their projectile attack doesn't give a player enough time to respond.

The tip for fighting the

The tip for fighting the Devilites is to have your shield up all the time.
Lower your shield only for the amount of time needed to deal one fast strike or two, then raise it again.
Don't rush it, take your time when fighting them :)
