King Krogmo’s Coliseum and the Blast Network Blowout! 8-2-2011

http://forums.spiralknights.com/en/node/19009
King Krogmo’s Coliseum officially opens today, and the first of many events, Blast Network, is available to play.
How to Play:
The Coliseum can be accessed by clicking on the crossed swords icon on the HUD. This opens the Coliseum interface and allows you to choose your event or join a forming guild party.
Krogmo has promised that he will be unveiling new events regularly throughout the season. Blast Network is the first and allows for three types of game modes:
Free For All - Blow up every player in sight, trying not to include yourself.
Random Team - Get placed in a random team with the sole purpose of blowing up the other team.
Guild Team - Open up slots for yourself and guild mates to battle another guild team (or random team if none are available). You can also join forming guild teams by simply pressing the ‘Guild’ tab within the Coliseum interface.
All Coliseum events have a crown entry fee. A portion of the fees are used as rewards for the winners of each match.
Blast Network Rules:
The object of the game is to eliminate your opponents with your bombs.
All of your personal equipment is ignored in Blast Network. When a match begins you will have a single weapon, a bomb that explodes in a cross formation. No charging is required. You can place bombs instantly. Any bomb will kill a player, even your own so watch out! You will find several powerups that randomly spawn in the field:
Bomb Blast Up - Increases the blast area of your bomb by one tile.
Bomb Count Up - Increases the number of bombs you can drop at once.
Speed Up - Increases your movement speed.
Health Up - Increases your health by one cell. While bombs eliminate you in one hit, other hazards such as traps and monsters will do a single cell of damage.
In each game you earn points for having your bombs eliminate your opponents. The player or team with the most points at the end of the match wins.
Respawning:
If you are killed you will wait in the rolling respawn queue. All players in the respawn queue will respawn at once after the respawn counter reaches zero. However, during this time you may instead choose to instantly respawn with energy in the same manner as in the Clockworks.
Earning Krogmo Coins:
Any Coliseum game played to completion will earn the participant 1 Krogmo Coin. These are token items that can be traded for special prizes from Sullivan, the Coliseum Rewards Supervisor found in the Haven Arcade.
Winning a match will earn the winning player or winning team an additional Krogmo Coin.
Bribing King Krogmo:
Before a match begins, players will find themselves in the barracks outside the match’s arena. Here you can bribe King Krogmo with energy to further up the ante for everyone for the match that’s about to begin. If players manage to fill the pot with energy, Krogmo will unveil a recipient and prize for the match.
Recipients include 'all participants,' 'the winning team,' and 'the winning player.' Prizes are random and can be anything from extra Krogmo Coins to special costume items.
Krogmo Coin Boosters:
A new upgrade can be purchased from the Upgrade Shop called a ‘Krogmo Coin Booster.’ This upgrade awards the user an additional Krogmo Coin for each completed Coliseum match and lasts 24 hours. Up to 6 Krogmo Coin Boosters may be used simultaneously.
Bombhead Masks:
To celebrate the launch of Blast Network, King Krogmo has constructed a series of festive costume helms for the Spiral Knights that curiously resemble a live bomb. Perhaps it’s some kind of monster joke?
There are many different kinds of Bombhead Masks out there for you to discover. Some can be purchased with Krogmo Coins and many more can be discovered as bonus prizes from bribing King Krogmo. Collect them all!
Krogmo’s Alchemy Machine:
King Krogmo has constructed a new kind of alchemy machine that Knights are free to use. Instead of it reading the recipes a Knight has learned, it instead stores unique recipes within the machine that a Knight may use as if it were his own.
Krogmo Alchemy Machines will allow Knights to craft items they are otherwise incapable of producing themselves, such as highly-prized weapon module trinkets.
...and there’s more to come!
King Krogmo has dedicated the entire season to new Coliseum events! Expect to see regular updates with exciting new events, rewards and Coliseum features.
Additional Changes

- The Haze Bomb is now 2* rarity and is no longer a requisite component of any of the Vaporizer bombs.

Oh yes Thunder Sword.

Come to me Bomba!

Well, I suspect i won't get to play until tomorrow, so anyone posting youtube videos of the game play would be greatly appreciated. :-)
I'm a little concerned about those trinkets. it sounds like in order to get important things for the regular game, you either have to play the PvP part of the game or pay at lest 1800CE to cover the unbinding fees, probably hundreds of CE more.
lol already on top of the leaderboard with 4 krog koins

I have no clue how to play this game at all but its fun!
Anyone found the NPC that exchanges tokens or the alchemy machine ?

Well already down with maintenance, becoming an update standard.
Also Dogrock will be ecstatic, finally a Khorovod 5 star sword!

BOO YEAH! 5* KHOROVOD!!!! AND PVP TOO! Too much prizes... I NEED THEM ALL!!! O yeah, Lowercase, if u r reading this, SEE YOU IN PVP.
Lord Exodius, Conquerer of Cradle

where in SK are the darn alchemy machines/ the place to use the Ktokens?
They expect us to play without knowing what you can get from them, so funny :)

the matchmaking system for the Coliseum is bugged /sadface

Do the recipes for the new troika line appear at basil too or just the new merchant???
Alchemy machine and Sullivan are both on the leftmost platform in the arcade.
everything is 50 tokens and up, including the Mod Calibrator material, which is needed to craft the trinkets.

For the Troika enthusiasts, Sullivan has recipes for a 3*-5* line of freezing Troika-style swords. The Triglav is a hoot!

Hmm... the PVP seems to be too fast and chaotic for me. Let's see if I can get used to it...
To be perfectly honest, I expected it to be a little different.
But +100 points for the SK team because Sullivan is a DEVILITE!
/cheer
:D

I wasn't expecting as much as this, so this is pretty awesome. I saw speculations for the modules, and thought it was possible, but unlikely. I was expecting maybe as many items as a boss in the token list, and the price to be 800cr to enter, not 200cr. Seeing all that stuff was really great, it was like a Spiral Knights Christmas (even though it's going to take a while to get that stuff). There's plenty to save up for, and I'm guessing by the time some people get bored of Blast Networks (I won't though) there will be the next coliseum event. I can't believe the next one is already planned and named and most likely being developed right now. In summary, I was expecting this to be a fun minigame to do every once and a while. Now with all the features like items, leaderboards, and different battle styles, this looks like it is going to be a much bigger part of SK than I thought.

Yep, the Coliseum is a big new feature that will be expanded in the near future. I can't get into any details just yet, but expect cool stuff from Lockdown. Very excited to get you guys playing that one soon!

Updates made it easier for hackers to do more damage or what not. I meet too many hackers that has full vog or full royal jelly or ten Levi blades which they don't even use.
Hackers? you must be high.
This is a Java based game, do you know how freaking hard is it to hack a java game?
I double-checked this game before joining to make sure there weren't any hackers ruining the game, to my knowledge there isn't a single working hack.
You must have seen the older players show you their epic inventory and you just can't stand not having a VH CTR sword...

I realize that functionally it doesn't make any difference, but I kind of expected to see some sort of building in the arcade to get to the PvP stuff rather than an icon. Accessing it as an icon makes it feel to me as if it isn't really part of the world, but some sort of tack-on.

@wrs1864
We experimented with a 'home' for it and always found it's far more convenient to have a big button on the hud. However, we very well may expand Krogmo's resort in the future (beyond the event levels and the barracks) if there is a need to do so.
CALLED IT. I TOTALLY CALLED IT.
Now I wish I had bet for CE on this one...

I sometimes get killed by a bomb that is placed off-screen. Annoying x_x
Also, what is the point in individual players' kill count?
You can just place some bombs in the middle, run away and wait for some guys that weren'T even close to accidentaly run around just in the time your bombs explode.

@dant some of the pros I met were in real life friends I saw them using this random cheat they found.they got full vog in their first day XD but my school is a but of cheaters and hacker who's too lazy to do it legitly.

I really enjoy this new game, but it's really hard to play when the game isn't properly drawing your opponents or their bombs so that you can actually see where they are. :(

I'm finding play impossible. I can't turn around corners without glitching into another lane, or randomly appearing dead at the bottom of the screen. I'll give it a bit for the servers to calm down so i can actually have a chance at winning.
So apparently, only Blast Network is available. Nothing about classic PvP or anything.
I am honestly extremely disappointed.
Edit: Actually played a bit.
I'm even more disappointed now - instant revives for 2 energy? Krogmo Coin Boosters? I honestly don't care much about it, but at this point, that just screams "money grab".
The lag was unbearable, both connection and client wise. I'd get random framerate spikes constantly, and there was quite a bit of rubber banding and random lagdeaths.
Yeah, I don't really know anymore.

This game runs perfectly smoothly for me... until it freezes and I must force quit SK. I played three matches, and it froze every time. The third time, when I restarted SK and got back to the game, it was completely glitchy. This is completely unplayable, which is very disappointing because it would have been fun.
Does anyone find the recipe prices completely ridiculous compared to the measly one token you get for playing a round (or two if you manage to get another one through the bribe). I would think they would give you like 3 per game at least, 5 for winning it, or something along those lines.
I find it ridiculous you have to play over 200 games to get up to one of the new 5*'s.... Not even obtainable in my eyes, especially as I actually hate the bomber game itself.

We experimented with a 'home' for it and always found it's far more convenient to have a big button on the hud.
I'm sure that is true, but by the same logic, most of haven should be just icons. Between the running and the loading, it takes me 2.5 minutes on my computer to get from the arcade to the AH to Brinks back to the arcade. The loading is less on another computer I have, but it still would be a matter of seconds if it was all icons. Despite the extra time, I still think the "feel" of the game is better with haven.
*shrug* As I said, it isn't that big a deal, I just think it would add to the game world. There are certainly other reports in this thread that appear to be much higher priority.
Hm, a few things that I feel need to be fixed:
1. Ranking and matchmaking: The points should be relative, not absolute. The way it is now, whoever plays the most gets to be the top player/top guild. A better system would be to get your rank higher or lower depending on who you beat, matching you with similar rank players, and there to be a rating cap.
2. Invisible bug
3. Lag/prediction. But I doubt there's much more to do in this department.
4. The icon in the social tab. It is kind of deformed
5. More money risking possibilities. The payout is kind of lame

Is there any way to prevent multi-cilent farming by afking in free games?
There's no 'free' games in this form of pvp; it always costs 200 cr to enter. If a player wants to pay 200 cr for a krogmo coin but not play, I suppose that's their choice.
Though I suppose they could add a shorter idle kick timer to pvp, if they wanted to stop people afking in games.
As for multi-client, that could be an issue, yes. The person doing it would need a lot of patience and willingness to spend around 10k per reward, as the tokens couldn't be mailed back to their main account, so I don't see it happening so much; there's also the risk they take that the prizes won't be worth 10k each on the market.

So, I've dipped into the bug reports section, as I'm getting client freezes, desynchs, and other problems trying to play Blast Network. It seems that everyone experiencing the same problems, right at launch, is using a Mac. Given that these issues are immediately present (and remember that the Auction House couldn't be used on some Macs when it was introduced), I have to wonder if the devs actually test this on anything but PCs.
Any Macs in-house being used for playtesting? Given that, yes, people on Macs like to play games too, this would seem to be a good path to follow.

Thanks OOO Three Rings for making us Beta Players feel like Cr@p, sorry for my words but if i wanted to play Bomberman i play it on my Vintage Super Nintendo System if you ask me. Stop This Stuff OOO Three Rings Pleace Stop! this will make more beta Players Leave the game.

@OverDingle
By free, I meant 'free-for-all' games, one of the 3 options you can choose.
Secondly, this is a event, not a permanent fixture which increases the rarity of items. The prize is trade-able, the pre-requisite to ctr/asi/damage bonus trinkets are extremely useful, these items has resell value for whoever that won't wanna spend their time on the game, just like every boss trinket items.
Except now, you can massive afk with much more cilents, without carrying anyone, to get them.
The resell value of these items will be far lower than the 10k it costs to even get one if you never win a match, because an average player will have an even spread of wins and losses - coming first and second once each per 8 games would give an average player 1.1k to the 1.6k they spend, and 9 coins. That's roughly 45 games per token reward; 9k spent and around 6k earnt back.
The 50 coin items will have a market value of 3-4k, so they'll probably get bumped up to 5k-ish to match our current 3* recipe market. The 100 coin items will have a value of 6k, and might get bumped up to 10k to match the 4* recipe market. The 5* recipes have a chance of being bumped up to around 25-30k - a player that multiclient farms them would be breaking even at best. But the 5* recipes would still only cost an average player 9k to get.
Let them waste their money. They won't actually profit. The only way to profit off this is to win consistently; coming 1st in 33% of games, 2nd in 66% of games, or a mix in between. Players that afk entire games won't win consistently.
Is there any way to join a match with less people? If there is please let me know. If there's not then I'm sorely disappointed with this update.
The way it is now is that there's far too many players in the same match, to the point where it requires an abysmally small amount of skill or strategy, and around 90% pure luck. So many bombs placed on the map that not many spots are safe to stand, and some bombs in places you can't even see (If you're higher in the field you can't see bombs below you for example. Have fun being blasted ''out of nowhere'')
Then there's the fact that bombs are tricky to place, especially while moving.
It seems like you have the same chances of winning with your eyes closed. The maps are just too small for so many players placing bombs at once.

{calculations deleted} The 50 coin items will have a market value of 3-4k,
You are confusing costs with value, they are two separate things.
On the coin supply side, you also left out the opportunity cost of playing the PvP game. Which, if you enjoy it, results in a negative cost, if you don't enjoy it, it will become a grindy type cost. If people are playing bomberman because it is fun, they won't care how much it cost to get the coins, they will just see selling the coins as free crowns.
On the demand side, there really aren't a huge number of these new trinkets/weapons that people would want, even if they were free. The trinket slot upgrade costs money and trinkets that aren't used clutter up your inventory. Most people will likely not want more than 4 to 6 of these and it is quite possible that the average player will fountain enough coins to create many more of them than the average player wants. If that happens, there will be a glut of mod calibrators and recipes.
The price of mod calibrators on the AH is already down 25k and it is just the first day. It wouldn't shock me if mod calibrators dropped under the price of most other 5* mats and the recipes dropped well under the equivalent basil prices. Or, maybe people will get bored with bomberman quickly, and prices will stay high. Either way, the "costs" that you calculated are only going to have a marginal impact on the price they will sell for.
Though that really just supports my argument that farming these coins with multiple clients won't be profitable in the long run. They simply won't sell at prices to make it worth it to obtain them without honestly playing the game. I didn't care much for what the actual prices would be, so I just went by rough figures. No need to include supply/demand or anything like that for the argument.
I like it. Lots of new stuff! Thanks OOO for making a great game :)
I really love this update, can't wait for Lockdown now. I've been playing for a while now but I think I've had my fill. I have enough for my second Bombhead mask now and I made it to number 1 so I'm happy. The lag is a killer and the fact that firepower goes up to 15 which means you can spam bombs and hope someone runs into the giant blast.

I agree with wrs1864. The fact that you access the coliseum just by clicking a button is boring and makes it look like it's not a part of the world. I also expected to see a new platform in the arcade or maybe even a new area to the right of the town square. Anyway, my humble suggestion is: remove the ugly icon and build any sort of actual gate to access the coliseum.
blast network aka pvp wasn't what i was expecting i wanted to directly slash friends or foes. like so we can see stronger.
I wonder what those mountain-named swords will be like...
