How do they work? Can you play against members in your own guild?

The opposing team is chosen

The opposing team is chosen randomly, so there's no way to force your team to face a team from the same guild.

Whether it's even possible, I don't know. They might've coded it to be impossible by running a check on the player guild, or you might actually see it happen someday.
