Depends

depending on your tier acres you would need different weapons
If you're in tier 1 I would recommend an autogun or blaster
The autogun is only good for rapid fire sO please note that when buying or crafting

My suggestions and conclusions I came to after playing some

Swift strike buckler for asi but always keep a backup def shield like grey owlite now on to armor.
Shadowsun or nameless sets are what I suggest. Shadow sun for max DMg in our final setup or nameless for max asi. Trinkets you will want the asi and dmg trinks depending on which armor you get. Lets put it all together. Shadowsun offers low DMg on each pc as well as pierce def and weakness to curse and poison. Curse can only be inflicted by phantoms and poison is out so basically the weakness don't really exist ingame to any degree. So shadowsun + two DMg trinks + ss buckler= max DMg + high asi. Making it a more offensive setup. Nameless on the otherhand is not much less offensive but way more defensive. Nameless offers elemental def and no resistances or weakness also it offers med asi on each pc. Let's put it together elemental is a much more useful def than pierce is currently. Now adding the pcs. Nameless med asi x2 + ss buckler + true shot elite trinks = max asi + vh DMg I find this setup much more to my liking as it is alot more defensive and not much less in the offense. The choice you make is up to you.
Now I suggest getting two dmg trinks and atleast one asi trink to give you options when you switch out your ss buckler sometimes for a more def option.
Now on to weapons some people say a true gunner uses only guns but I find it useful to have a neutral sword for sticky situations when you can't stay at range. You options for neutral/normal dmg on sword are cutters/caliburs/troikas I wouldn't suggest the cutters because they have no knockback and wouldnt help you to get at range again that leaves the leviathan and troika. Levi has a charge atk with awesome knockback and a reg three hit atk with decent knockback on third hit making it a decent option. The troika line on the other hand is a slow 2 hit sword with great knockback on both hits and the charge making it the best option for getting stuff out of you face, it just has poor recovery for shielding and it has also been debated to have slightly lower dmg than other two hand swords in comparison but your a gunner what do you care you just want to get away not sword everything.
Now on to the good stuff guns I suggest carrying one of each DMg type pierce/elemental/shadow this will allow you to maximize your dmg and also make it likely that you can apply several status effects. The guns I have are Polaris (ele/shock), Callahan (pierce/stun) and biohazard (shadow/poison). I like my setup but others like different guns for different dmg types some ppl like alchemers for elemental or shadow for example. It's up to you just make sure you cover all three dmg types and do research to find the gun you prefer for each. Good luck and happy hunting.

Edit: Added paragraphs to the best of my ability now that im at home and not on my iphone. Hopefully i can get the judge to throw out the grammar infraction i got from the diligent officer below.

WALL OF TEXT

Ever since their inception, the formatting on webpages and message boards (and in-browser email) has been hard to read. As such, it is common internet courtesy to make a space between different paragraphs. It has nothing to do with "proper English" but of course we assume you learned what a paragraph is in elementary school.

When you have a space between paragraphs, it makes it much easier to read. The same is true with proper capitalization and punctuation. No one expects you to write in MLA format or have perfect grammar and spelling, but as long as you put an effort into making your post easy to read, we are very forgiving (other than a few [meanieheads], pardon my English).

AFTER ALL, IT IS VERY RUDE TO TYPE IN ALL CAPS. IT IS ALSO RUDE TO TYPE A "WALL OF TEXT" IN YOUR POSTS. WE AREN'T ENGLISH TEACHERS, WE JUST WANT TO UNDERSTAND YOUR POINT INSTEAD OF GETTING DISTRACTED WITH THE FORMATTING.

Hope I didn't come off as a jerk. I just want to give a reason to correcting someone's grammar, rather than simply telling them that they are wrong.
