Just remember what it's like to start a new game, how bewildering and overwhelming it all can be, how arduous and agonizing the journey to accumulate crowns in order to improve your gear can be, then pity the newbies and kindly GIVE them some 1* gear, like a flashier sword or more decorative shield. They will be so appreciative and the whole game site will benefit from your small acts of welcoming generosity.
How to Make Your Personal Contribution to a Better Game
Actually, one star gear can be bad, as it can't be upgraded past three stars, if at all. You don't want to encourage someone to pay to upgrade a one star piece of gear to two and then three stars, only to discover that they have to start over with something different to progress beyond that.
I don't mind helping out newbies. In fact, I like doing it.
But if a random persons named "xxxM4st4xxx" begs for crowns/equip not caring for correct spelling and not even using a question mark for a question, I am somehow disinclined to gift anything.
So I guess I like helping in a way of "helping in helping himself". Giving good tips, describing good gear and so on.
starting fresh is part of the fun, learning new things before u get jaded with the game and move on...
i give advice for free (if i can help), and im nice about it.
on the off chance i meet someone who after a while asks me for some item, or (doesnt directly ask), and i actually like them and talk to them etc, then i have given items in those cases, not to ppl who spam gief cr etc...
srsly, begging for currency/items in a game where people pay rl money to play, is the same as begging in the streets for money, only its frivolous.
they should be begging their parents/legal guardians, or spending there allowances on ce perhaps instead of whatever they do spend it on.
im just glad sk seems to have a very long ignore list
I give free weps and crowns sometimes .. usually to players who i meet in the arcade who are asking questions.
but NEVER EVER to beggars or people who message me .. free crowns/energy plz .. etc.
I help out random new people. I've given away weapons, armors, etc. all with UV's as I don't keep the ones that don't have UVs on them when I ragecraft (2* as I don't waste my time on 1*). They never ask for it, they're just asking questions about the game, I decide I like them and looky, you got something for free. New people I don't mind.
Beggers on the other hand piss me off. Wah! Give me CE, crwns plz, CE plz, you're rich give me stuffz. WAH! I and every other 5* person worked to get our stuff, we're not going to give it away just because YOU don't want to put in any effort. And the beggars will get something from me when the sun shines in Hell (not Michigan). ...Give yourself +1 if you catch the reference.

Yep, I sometimes give swords, guns or armor to newbies who complete the tier with me. Never asked for.
I'm telling them about the gate map.
I just started yesterday...Got called a noob when I took like 30 hits to kill some wolf thing. Dude decided to quit and leave me and the other guy on the next level down. Turns out, that next level had some wolf mini-boss type monster that would shock me and kill me 2 hits. It was soooo awesome. -_- Gotta start somewhere, right?
I just started like 2 months ago.
Got over a dozen 5* items.
Was dressed on my spiral costume yesterday (Crest of Almire, Divine Avenger and other stuff ON), just to get kicked from the party, having been mistaken for a noob... *sigh*
hey "I" like to dress in my spiral custome too!
I went on a JK with full spiral default armor as costume.some guy in full vog was like wtf is a noob doing here and kicked me out. This is worst than being invited to FSC when all my friends party members die and have no idea I'm still in tier two.
I've been costuming my starter gear for about a week now (the pigtails are cuter than my salamander suit). The plus side is that people don't beg me for stuff when I'm chilling in Haven (judging from the other games I play, most beggars asking for gear/crown aren't actually new people anyway, just people PRETENDING to be new, either on an alt or just unequipping their gear). The downside is that people randomly want to open trade to sell me stuff I don't need (I'm not going to buy your brimstone for 250cr, sorry).
Onto the original topic, there are a lot of ways to foster a good gaming environment without handing out freebies. I mean, you can if you want, and occasionally I'll toss a bit here or there.
But I find it better to just help with the experience. I do runs with new guild members. I help them with what I can, as far as questions or recipe runs. If I'm at Basil with extra crown, I'll look for a recipe someone needs and buy it for them (with them paying me back for it). Stuff like that. You can be nice without giving away. And the downside to just tossing gear at people is that it can leave them unprepared for what they'll face at deeper levels. I've seen people who buy or are given 2 star gear jump into tier two without really having a grasp on mob abilities, level designs, basic stuff that tier 1 is there for.
People generally enjoy things more when they have some ownership and responsibility.
And there's the old saying: Give a man a fish, feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, feed him for a lifetime.
Same concept applies.
Make a man a fire he will be warm for the night. Set a man on fire with a firepot and he will be warm for the rest of his life.
I purposely hand out weapons that are less common and so something they might not have tried otherwise. Recently I've been handing out an alchemer flavor of the day. Maybe help convince a newbie or two that guns don't suck it's just the proto gun.

Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will sit in a boat drinking beer all day.
loloz.
Lol. Yesh, I do help people but I feel sad to give them a item that ends at 3*. I would give them wolves sets with Cali IRS, autoguns, and defenders. (Free t2 access) and I used to when I had more money. Now due to CE costs I cannot. I did this when CE was stable at 3-4k.
How could I give anyone equipment? They're all bound to me.
I consider myself relatively newbie (although I have paid for energy and because of that I have two 5-star things) and I NEVER give beggars anything!! I think it's because I remember that when I was a newbie (which was recently) I never expected people to give me anything other than elevators fee. Whenever I see people begging, I just think it's funny!!
i'm so ashamed of myself. sometimes whenever i see people begging and i tell them to go away. and then sometimes i beg.
i'm so ashamed of myself.
I rarely give out crowns, energy, or equipment because I know what it's like to start out. Newbies don't need that stuff. I know because I was a newbie not too long ago. If you want 1* (or better) gear, then dive in there and earn your crowns.
Good thing the only 1* equipment I made/bought was Hot Edge and THANKFULLY it upgraded to Searing Edge. I didn't realize they were worthless until later.
Man, this place is so cruel to beggars. Which is normal for an MMO so I didn't even try. In fact, I'm part of the cruelty and never give even 1cr to beggars.
But I did give a blaster to my RL buddy/guildmate. And then told 'em to work for the rest of his ****.
I usually help out people if we can get along. If someone is asking questions I try and teach them about energy, crowns, and the game in genral. IMO, there insn't a good enough tutorial for that kind of stuff (actually none), just a tutorial for fighting in the beginning. I occasionally give away crowns, but what I usually do is sell crowns and energy for just a little cheaper (at a 1:50 ratio, energy to crowns). This way they know they have to earn it, but can still afford some energy even when they only have 2000cr. If I become friends with them I help them with the clockworks and tabs, but I tell them "as soon as you reach T2, I won't pay your tab". Also, the best thing to ever do to someone that is just asking questions (and not begging) is to direct them to the wiki.
ATM I give free items and crowns to IRL friends who ply spiral knights.when my friend started I gave him some equipment to start out after he does some tier one.
I hand out Flourishes every so often. It's part of my "not everyone needs a Calibur" drive to eliminate the scourge of people whining about how hard it is to kill imps and wolvers.
Here's the thing about begging that people don't realize: it's not as effective as using social engineering. Cozy up to people, be nice to them, ask questions like a good little noob. That's when the guys in Vog/Vog will think, "Well, I was a noob once" and toss a nice 2* your way. And to that guy who gave me a UV:gremlin Flourish, thank you - it's now a Final Flourish and I carry it often.
Well, I've nothing against generosity, and good job if you are fine with giving out free gear. What I want to say is that when beggars come about, giving them free gear is not a very good idea. Sure, maybe it is cheap to you, but you had to start somewhere, right? Chances are you went down and spent your energy in the clockworks and got crowns and upgraded your stuff. Now these beggars are taking advantage of your doing tha and not working at all for their stuff. Just want to make sure that you know not to give into beggars.
