bigfootm has
the right of it, for optimal usage.
also, grey owlite works good in FSC too. altho i prefer VPS.
Barb works well everywhere.
Ironmight and Ancient are both cool in non FSC scenarios as well. I have done FSC with the ancient, but its less than ideal. Breaks in w bumps vs flame patches, lol. Falling roof destroys it too.

Gunners benefit from shields
Gunners benefit from shields with status resistances since the armor doesn't have any. The Owlite and Skelly shields are good options in that regard.

Admittedly, the Crest of
Admittedly, the Crest of Almire is a better option so far as a shadow defense shield goes, but it isn't realistically obtainable for someone running T2 or starting out on T3, as it requires tokens from Vanaduke. The ONLY other option, so far as I can tell, is the Skelly Shield line. And you'll need one, honestly, if you wind up facing fiends (Devilites in particular) in Strata 4 and below. So BigFootM is quite correct in saying that it isn't an option. It's a frickin' necessity.
Right now I have a Mighty Defender, Sinister Skelly Shield, and a Wise Owlite Shield that I swap between as I need them. Having the right defense types on hand makes a huge difference to how difficult it is to progress. I'll admit that the status resists on the Skelly shield aren't as useful as the ones on the Owlite one. They are pretty much identical in all other respects though, right down to the reduced Normal defense as compared to the Defender line.
I had started the Plate shield line (which ends in the Volcanic Plate Shield), and I found that the pure Normal defense it has, while very high, doesn't hold up well against the mixed-damage attacks you see so often in T2 and T3. I may get back to it later, but for now my other options vastly outperformed it at 3*, so I didn't see the need to upgrade a 4th shield line just yet.

I'd just like to say my VPS
I'd just like to say my VPS can stand quite a few Trojan hits, not change color when hot by zombie breath completely, and reals after a few hits against the fire traps and shadow fire. I was thinking about getting a Crest. Is it really worth it?
