i have just learnt the recipie for this sword and i have the materials, crowns and energy needed to create it but i cant press the transmute button! is there something im doing wrong here?

Some recipes are, yes, but
Some recipes are, yes, but not all.
E.g. you can craft a Calibur (**) without a pre-item - only mats + cr + energy. Then you build your way up to Tempered Calibur (***) where you need a Calibur.
If it's the first (root) item in an alchemy path there is no precursor needed.
Did you unequip the sword?
