Hello all. I signed up here today, but I haven't gotten to play the game yet. Hope no knight here bites.
I have 1 question, is it really true that you can change the controls scheme in Spiral Knights?
Hello all. I signed up here today, but I haven't gotten to play the game yet. Hope no knight here bites.
I have 1 question, is it really true that you can change the controls scheme in Spiral Knights?
Oh, I see. Seems simple. Thanks for the advice.
Another question, How does the Clockworks work?
Clockworks = dungeons, quite simply. You journey into them, paying 10 energy to go down each level aside from Clockwork Terminals (which is where Basil, a recipe vendor whose wares change every time you encounter him, resides). Kill things, get stuff, profit. For more in-depth things, her are some good links.
Does energy have to be acquired to explore a Tier?
You will need energy to explore the clockworks, yes. You have a mist tank that can hold up to 100 mist energy (ME) that will refill for free over a period of 22 hours. You can also buy crystal energy (CE), either with real money or with crowns that you earn in the clockworks. (100 CE is worth about 5200 crowns right now.)
It costs 10 energy to go down an elevator in the clockworks. Your mist energy will automatically be used first. Once that is empty, you will start spending crystal energy.
Energy is also needed for crafting.
Without energy, you can no longer play Spiral Knights?
Well, you can, but you won't be able to use the alchemy machines, buy weapon/trinket slots, heat amplifiers, or coin boosters, and you won't be able to go into the Clockworks. Hey, at least it recharges and you can buy crystal energy for crowns via the energy depot.
PVP only requires crowns.
Elevators for the clockworks (pve) require energy, though. Generally speaking, the energy you spend doing a run will usually be covered by the crowns you make on the run, if you pay attention to what gates/levels you're running. Arenas and graveyards have a large payout (though they're difficult!), for example. :)
Plus, you get 100 Mist Energy every 22 hours in addition to Crystal Energy.
If nothing else, energy is *dirt cheap* if you prefer to buy it, particularly considering you generally get a return in the form of crowns when you use it to go down into the clockworks.
Does crafting new items also requires energy?
And are crowns "currency?"
Crowns are the coins you pick up in the Clockworks, and they are a currency in this game. Important to note, however, is that Energy is used for many (often more important and gameplay related) activities as well... Which matters because one form of Energy (Crystal Energy or CE) is tradeable between players, either in regular trades or through the special energy exchange window.
All CE is bought with real money initially (except for prizes during lotteries :P), but players exchange it for crowns so they can buy some things. There is no practical limit to the amount of CE you can have at one time.
When using Energy to perform an action, any remaining Mist Energy (ME) you have is first used, and then the remainder (or all if you have no ME) is deducted from your CE, if you have enough. So if you pay 10 energy to go down a floor when you have 100(full) ME, you will end up with 90 ME; if you go down a floor with 5 ME and 200 CE, you'll end up with 0 ME and 195 CE.
Crafting 3 star items and above (mid to end game) REQUIRES some CE, as the total cost is more than the maximum of your mist.
As stated above, it's possible to make enough crowns through running dungeons to buy back the CE you spent on running it in ME/CE; it's even possible to make a hefty profit. In tier 1, unless you do a couple of arenas, this is currently unlikely to happen at the current CE<->Crown exchange rate, but in tier 2 it is fairly easy, and in tier 3 it's very easy to make back the energy you spent lest you die. My point about the arenas is important, because picking the right gate (a set of sequential dungeons) is needed to maximise your profit, if you care about that. General rule of thumb is that Arena levels and Graveyard levels (random chance at some depths) give you the most crowns. The bosses' dungeon sets are also fairly dependable in profit for their tiers.
Hope this helps. Happy delving!
I also have to ask this. Is it a bad idea or does it make it tougher to play Spiral Knights with a laptop?
Personally I don't like playing with a laptop, as mine has no mouse. YMMV.
If you have a mouse, or are some kind of masochist who likes using those stupid pad things that laptops have instead of a mouse, then you should probably be fine - as long as your laptop is up to spec of course.
Most laptops lack the video processing capacity to smoothly run a 3D game like Spiral Knights, but some laptops, especially those designed for gaming, can run the game just fine. Either way you'll probably want a decent mouse and/or gamepad to go with the laptop.
I would say you should try it and see how it goes with your machine.
Thank Icee for your advice! I was trying to get a laptop with good processing to play Spiral Knight. But I'm not too sure if it'll run it fast instead of slow.
Usually, laptops are not designed for gameplay. But give it a try anyway, unless your laptop has a separate graphics card or a superiour integrated graphics card, the game will have some visual lag. There is also the problem of latency, if you play outside of the US.
But all in all, enjoy the game!
What graphics cards laptops usually have?
Usually an integrated one, that's fused with the motherboard. Specifically designed laptops like Alienware won't have much of a problem processing games.
But it at least has a Geforce graphics card. And I use a USB mouse to aim my guns.
I bet swordies and bombers won't have much trouble with keyboard play though.
Do laptops from HP, Toshiba, or Gateway have good processing speed?
It still depends on the model and whether or not it has a standalone graphics card.
Depends on cost. Try to read the specifications and processing speed. Always look for an ACTUAL graphics card (not Intel Graphics Media Accelerator or the like)
Dual-processors may be better than quad though. Does SK use more than one processor at any given time? Mine seems to be stuck at 25% CPU usage, indicating it may not be the case.
You don't need an incredibly powerful computer to play SK. Just find something with a sufficient amount of RAM (I recommend 3 to 4 GB) and a decent microprocessor, something along the lines of a dual core would be fine. I have onboard graphics; ATI Radeon HD 4200 and it plays just fine too.
P.S. Welcome to Spiral Knights! Hope to see you around in the game. My characters are Zennyplus (bomber) and Spookydemi (Handgun user)
Thank you. That's all I wanted on laptops. Fern and Zenny, I'll follow your advice, and Zenny I'll find you on SK. :)
My laptop (Macbook Pro, don't worry Window fans, I run Windows on it :D) runs the game fine, but I don't wanna go get a wireless/usb mouse for it. Any good controls for a laptop?
You could use a USB gamepad. I have a Logitech controller (although I use it with a mouse for SK) and Xbox controllers work with Windows.
Those are some good choice of controls.
Also, I now started on Spiral Knights. And I wanted to know how does a guild works?
You must be invited for it to work.
In a guild, you are given access to your guild's 'Guildhall', and that is a private are for you and your guild mates.
You are also given access to the command /g
The command allows your knight to speak with other guild members.
Yes, you can change the controls. In game, press esc to bring up the main menu. Click on the controls tab. You can reconfigure your controls there.
