Armors, Helms, and Shields: The Ideal Arsenal

I'm sure this question has appeared multiple times, but maybe not in the same grand presentation. So I will ask and attempt to answer it.

BACKGROUND: Master Armorer, Mad Hatter, and Master Shieldbearer achievements: amass 10 armors, helms, and shields, respectively, in your arsenal.

QUESTION: What are the 10 best armors, helms, and shields? [ALL AREAS]

So far I see these armors and/or their corresponding helms to be popular:
1. Vog Cub Coat
2. Skolver Coat
3. Volcanic Demo Suit
4. Nameless Poncho
5. Mad Bomber Suit
6. Deadshot Mantle
... but that's about it. Are there any others that are very good for profitable or boss strata?

As for shields (there are clearly fewer to choose from, but still):
1. Grey Owlite Shield
2. Volcanic Plate Shield
3. Barbarous Thorn Shield
4. Dread Skelly Shield
... and that's about it. I'm certain some of the others are useful too.

Of course such equipment depends greatly on the playing style and the expedition, but there are clearly certain items that come in handy much more often than or are superior to others, and those are the items I (and others) should strive for.

Regarding the achievements...

You can still obtain the achievement with 10 Caliburs, 10 wolver caps, 10 wolver coats, etc. From that list you made, I have similar gears... I'm mainly a sword user.

Armors
1. Vog Cub Set (FSC)
2. Skolver Set (Beasts)
3. Mad Bomber Suit (Arena)
4. Divine Set (Costume lol)

Shields
1. Grey Owlite Shield (Everywhere else)
2. Volcanic Plate Shield (FSC)
3. Barbarous Thorn Shield (Beasts)
4. Crest of Almire (Fiends)
5. Swiftstrike (testing weapon speed)

I don't have much time to go into more detail in the gears. However, I didn't feel the need to get anything else besides the ones
I listed. It is also good to mix and match if possible.

If you're considering to

If you're considering to upgrade to 5* everything of your 10 "achievement items" it could get really expensive. Just buy the cheapest items in the AH and re-sell them if you're just concerned with the achievements. 0* items are cheapest but it's impossible to properly resell them in the AH, so picking up popular 2* items such as those Spiltmilk said will net you a minimal loss (10% of your cr or less if you can jack up the prices a bit).

The Achievements

If I just needed to achieve the achievements, I'd just make 10 Wolver Caps, sell them, etc. I wish, however, to earn them by spending a good amount of time and energy towards building up a large arsenal of items, up to the point where the only major interest left is Three Rings' next major player retention update =P Of course, it may be that say 8 armors cover all the bases, in which case I would just make 2 2* armors and sell them to get the achievement.

This forum is titled "The Arsenal" so I thought I'd ask about as general an arsenal question as can be.

@Spiltmilk I can understand why you'd choose those sets, although I think the Divine Veil is a nice helm for it's Elemental + Shadow protection (the lack of normal defense is not as important for the monsters in T3), while the Valkyrie Helm makes a shinier costume. I actually haven't seen many people using the Crest of Almire; maybe they decided to spend their Almirian Seals on the Fang of Vog instead. I am mostly a sword user too, so I'll probably have similar things.

Question: are the health bonuses of the Ancient Plate Mail/Helm worth it at all? Should I get either of those before a Blackened Crest? I think they might come in handy for preventing premature death, although their lack of elemental, shadow, or even piercing defense is a major drawback in T3, where their health bonus is most apparent. The same question could be asked of the Vitasuit Deluxe.

no best. opinion and criteria.

well, if u go with a skolver set through a depth, that doesnt deal much piercing dmg and ur like "that wasnt hard at all, i didnt feel much of a drawback, since i dodged most attacks anyway", then i dont see any disadvantages on the ancient plate on that particular depth compared to skolver except for the speed decrease, which might be significant. some guy on these forums said something like "if ur getting hit, ur doing it wrong". on the other hand if u dont get hit, the health bonus would be as much of a waste as all of ur defenses such as the piercing defense on the skolver set in the example depth. id say yes and no, more like whatever u enjoy the most, so u can suck most of the fun out of the game. whether defenses matter much or barely or at all, needs to be tested, which requires u to get both armors and destroys the purpose of deciding for 1. of course ther may be experienced people saying this and that, but their opinions may not match urs.

You are quite right in saying that the avoiding of damage is much more important than its mitigation (through armor, etc). If it were that easy to avoid damage altogether, Vitapods would be mostly useless, as well as health capsules. Still, no matter how skilled you are, it's difficult to complete a T3 expedition without getting hit once. That said, even if you don't get hit much, hits can be accompanied with status inducing effects, and if you find yourself frozen in a danger room or on fire in an arena, one hit could mean a large amount of health lost.

But here's an example of what I'm discussing: take the Azure Guardian Armor. Its recipe sold reliably by Kozma in the Bazaar and at the subtowns; it provides Normal and Piercing defense. Now look at the Deadly Virulisk Suit. It has a small amount less Normal defense, but it has a poison resistance. More importantly, however, it has a medium damage bonus vs. slimes. If worn with its helm, this can be a Very High damage bonus and be helpful in the RJP. Now look at the Justifier Jacket. It has the same defense as the Deadly Virulisk Suit, but no status resists. It does, however, have med handgun ASI, which can greatly increase the DPS of guns if worn with its helm. Now take the Skolver Coat. It has the same defense stats as the Deadly Virulisk Suit as well, but it also has a status resist to freeze and a med sword damage bonus. Of course, Normal + Piercing is not that helpful unless you often find yourself bitten by wolves, caught on floor spikes, hit by jellies (who are probably the easiest monster to dodge), or, most likely, being hit by the range attacks of the Toxigel and Giant Lichen Colony.

By that logic, you should never get the Azure Guardian Armor unless you want to look like the spiral warden or something; the Deadly Virulisk Suit is only really helpful if you want to blaze through the RJP like a hot knife through butter (which you may find yourself wanting to do), the Justifier Jacket is neat for gunslingers, but of course I didn't even begin to compare it to the other gunslinger gear (Deadshot Mantle, Nameless Poncho), while the Skolver Coat is helpful for swordsmen in general, particularly in freeze or beast strata.

The superiority of the other armors over the Azure Guardian Armor does not really depend on playing style or preference: you could wear a Skolver Coat with only bombs and guns and it would still be more useful to you than the Azure Guardian Armor due to its freeze resist.

By the way, does anyone have an Omega Shell? Is it helpful/useful anywhere?

devine veil

Devine Veil is awesome! Not as custumes, though, It is useful when you pair it with the Normal/Piercing or Normal/Elemental armor. It also has a shiny halo!

I used to have an Omega Shell, the shield isn't all that great. It was quite a long time ago and this is what I remember..

Lumbers in RJP (before they inflicted part elemental damage), 1 swing would reduce it to greenish health.
Gun Puppies in RJP, all I remember is that it blocked their attacks way better than my Barb shield does.
Jellies, Retrodes, Spikes, and Slags broke this shield with no problem.

This comment is what I was hoping to see. Pair a Divine item with a Skolver item and you're covered against a lot of stuff (all 4 damage types, plus fire, shock, and freeze) without having to swap out armours. Good for jack-of-all-trades characters, heavy soloers, those who can't afford to specialize yet, etc.

Well looking at the shields,

Well looking at the shields, it seems to be a non-issue since there are only 8 5* shield lines, forgetting Ironmight and Omega Tortoise ever existed. Plus Swiftstrike, making 9 shields already.
