I am a returning player to spiral knights. I havent played for around 4 months, so alot of things are new to me. I was wondering what is currently the best armour/ sheild set for a bomb/ sword player. I was thinking about quick silver, with a owlite shield but I'am not sure if that would give me enough defense for tier 3 or not.

I do like the grey owlite
I do like the grey owlite shield, but I'am not sure about vog. It seems to sacrifice some protection for increased sword strength, which only benifits one of my weapons. Is this true of vog when you upgrade it?
Its been some time since my original post and I was thinking that an armor that protected me from status effects and all types of damage might be better for me. I've been thinking that radiant silver mail and grey owlite cowl might be ok. Would this be ok or do you think all of the resistances are too spread out to provide any worthwhile protection.

Not so much elemental anymore.
The fire and shock resistance of grey feather are definitely nice. More and more, though, I find that there is very little elemental in the game (construct attacks only) and much more piercing and shadow, especially since the polyp and howlitzers were added. Alpha wolvers and devilites are particularly devastating in tier 3 without the proper defenses, so I'd think about working up shadow and piercing armors before getting elemental if you can.

I'am ok with changing the
I'am ok with changing the sheild but i'am hesitant on changing the helm, because I would be vulnerable to elemental attacks. With that in mind radiant silver mail does have piercing and shadow defense but I couldn't find any other armor's or shields that had the same. Maybe I could just switch up shields depending on the strata i'm in and add agis and the crest of almire to my arsenal?

If you are a Sword/bomber
If you are a Sword/bomber then a combo of Vog Cub & Volcanic Demo or Mad Bomber. Pick the Volcanic Helm over the suit though if you are only going to use one piece of bomber armor (CTR Med instead of CTR Low). Remember trinkets too. A full Vog set plus 2x Elite Bomb Focus trinkets plus a L10 heated bomb would give your bombs CTR Max and your swords ASI VH.

It's only been 5 days but...
I know its only been 5 days but I realized something. I really don't like using bombs, its not as fun as constantly being in danger when fighting with a sword and the damage isnt as good. I decided to scrap the whole mixed set thing. It kept me from recieving horrendous damage but it offered so little protection vs everything else that I would die in like 3 hits.
With that in mind I'am now in the process of getting an armor set for each type of damage. This is what I have so far Skelly set, wolver (eventually skolver), bristling thorn shield and the magic set (eventually greay feather). This way I can specialize in whatever I'am fighting depending on the gate and I won't be unprotected. (Edit: I have the shields of the sets that I own so far.)
My sword will be the cold iron vanquisher although I only have calibur at the moment. I plan to have three other swords in my second weapon slot to compliment it. I currently have ice branish and snarble barb. Right now I'am farming jelly king so that I can get the faust.
Sorry that I did a total 180 on ya but does this seem ok?

Reequip at the terminal.
Having lots of sets of armor and weapons equipping based on the stratum is always the best way to go, so that definitely sounds good. Just don't forget to reequip at the terminal. The other day I went through a beast stratum with my dark thorn blade and forgot to swap it for a non-piercing sword before entering a jelly stratum, so I basically couldn't use my sword.
For shields, don't necessarily worry about matching them to your armor; it's more important to match them to the things you're likely to get hit by. For instance, I find it easy to dodge most elemental attacks (retrode lasers, gun puppy bullets, lumber whacks), so I'll often choose my dark thorn shield over the wise owlite, both for its sword damage bonus and its extra protection against teleporting wolvers.
You're going to find the faust to be very slow if you're used to medium-speed swords like the calibur, brandish, and snarble barb. If you don't end up liking the faust, try the nightblade. It's also shadow and a 3-swing medium-speed like your other swords instead of 2-swing slow.

Thanks for the help guys it was much appreciated. Icee although I agree with what you said about shields but I think I'll still go with a variety of shields because I don't get hit alot with any one type of attack in particular. Since this is the case for me I would like a little extra protection on whatever strata I am on just in case I get trapped by mobs or something. Other than that I agree with you guys on everything.
well, if your a sword guy, vog cub helm and armor are best because they have attack speed increase medium. the ironmight plate shield, grey owlite shield, and the omega shell are popular. i think that the omega is best because in the vanaduke fight video from the wiki, it stood up to a attack from vanaduke's mace. and yes, you should use a 5* shield in tier 3. you might be able to survive a little with a 4* but for people that use their shield constantly, you need a 5*. so if its a owlite shield you want for tier 3, the grey owlite shield is a 5*, and a very good shield. but nowadays its very expensive. it is tons cheaper to alchamize one.
