The Knights probably aren't robots; a few of them are referred to by gender. In the Ironclaw Munitions Facility Recon Module, Grantz and Parma of the Alpha Squadron are referred to as a man, and woman respectively. Furthermore, Rulen sates "Sometimes [he] [thought] that beneath his (Grantz) iron suit is a body of equally heavy iron," implying that a metallic body would not be the norm for the Knight. These statements heavily imply that the Knights are biological entities. The captain at the core research outpost is also referred to as a "she," providing further implications of the Knights' organic status.

Actually, I kind of thought they were sentient suits of armor, with an incorporeal form inside them. Ghost powered. They could identify themselves as a gender, referring to what used to be their bodies.

hmm, the knights arrive on Cradle with the base armors, don't they.
Okay, well my idea still stands, only they could be a created lifeform like Warforged from later Dungeons and Dragons subsets, or golem-like. Actually, I picture the Warforged exactly; a fully sentient intelligence that was crafted magically. They don't need to eat, breathe, etc. The Spiral Knights are capable of working perfectly fine in any of the conditions of the Clockworks, including the core, which must be fairly pressurized and hot.

emergency equipment and whatnot
I sort of figured that newbie gear was taken from escape pods, the way that fighter pilots got emergency equipment for when they had to eject. The reason we can't see their faces and the reason they can operate so well in the clockworks might be that Knight armor might double as a self-contained environment.

No really, we're all snipes. Just try it: Herd all the town square snipes into the "southwest garden". Go afk and wait (stand in the door so none escape) / check SK periodically. After 20-30 Minutes, the garden suddenly is full of freshly hatched newbie knights. That proves it! You can even see that they still move almost like snipes.

Mechs
We are all empty sets of energised armour. We have lights for eyes. We use energy. We burn, get shocked, get frozen and lose power, but don't 'die'. When 'dead', we can repower ourselves with energy. We don't eat, not really, even though there were supposed to be hints that we do.
Curse is magic. It can affect anything.
Poison just stops us from healing. If we were bio in any way, our bio-components would decompose due to bacterial attack and breakdown of organic material.
We hold freakin massive swords and swing them with impossible orientation skill exceeding that of a mere biological entity.
We are not Iron Man. Tony Stark does not live within us, and we are not powered by a playboy human with a miniature Arc Reactor plugged into his chest.
We are not Ceph. Otherwise we would be hunted by Prophet (Aka, Alcatraz) to no end, and be firing crystal guns and jumping around like robo ninjas. And the only jelly we have is that funny armour. XD
