Um. I hate to say it, but
Um. I hate to say it, but that's some fairly horrendous pixel art. Your colours run together, you don't have enough contrast and the shading is haphazard.
Here's an example of an in-game costume I sprited for a friend - http://i.imgur.com/tzCUh.png - I get that you might be going for something different stylistically, but that's no excuse to not use strong colours.

I hear you on this, but I'd strongly encourage you to develop as an artist and make more vibrant palettes. Pastels are great! Really, they are. But you have to know how to use them; the palettes you're using wash everything out and make it look flat. Finally, nobody should ever ever EVER save pixel art as a jpg. For the love of anything that could ever be considered holy by anyone. Please, use png.
(as a tip for the 2d thing - maybe revisit shading and texture? The bombhead is more than likely metal, which means it would have bright highlights and high contrasts. It's also a sphere - I've gone ahead and done a two-minute example of how I'd sprite a metal sphere and how you seem to have done so[1].)

you can't disregard his personal taste as inferior skill. It is very possible that he looks at his work and at yours, and likes his better. Different things fit differently people's eyes differently.

I beg to differ, at least slightly. While artistic taste may be subjective, artistic ability or application thereof is quantifiable. Neither here nor there, though.
Someone who's saving pixel art as a jpg is making a mistake. Sorry, but it's true. Not attacking you as a person, but saying that if you wanted to work on some pixel art it might be better to save it as a file format that doesn't destroy all your hard work.
Also, while I respect someone's belief that their palettes are fine, using colours that are indistinguishable without close examination tends to be a faux pas in pixel art communities.
