I was wondering if you guys (and gals!) could offer me some suggestions on gear. I've been looking at the Wiki, but there are an insane amount of armors there. I need it narrowed down so I don't sink a ton of Time, Energy, and Crowns into a sub-par set.

Edit: I have my eyes on the Drake line for it's fire resistance and lack of ice weakness, but it doesn't offer much else, so I don't know...

Fire isn't a difficult status

Fire isn't a difficult status to avoid, blocking it with a shield that has max Fire Resistance is usually enough to stop you from getting burnt.
A shield that has Elemental Defence and Fire Resistance means you will take almost no damage from fire.
So you don't really need it on armour.

I would recommend just picking armour that augments your style of play and worry about defense second.
There is almost always a defensive style set for any armour line you pick.

Shoebox offers good advice.

Shoebox offers good advice. Every armor set has advantages and disadvantages; and some of us have different outfits for different kinds of dungeons.

Playing style strongly affects what gear will best suit you. You may need to explore a bit to figure out what play suits you, as well as watching other people and wondering if you would like that. For instance,

1. If you like melee fighting, do you want slow and heavy-hitting, or faster and lighter-hitting? Slow and heavy leads down the Khorovod and Faust paths; fast as lightening leads down the Striker and Hunting Blade paths; steady means you probably want the Calibur line. Do you then want extra damage or extra speed from the various different armors?

2. Do you prefer range over melee, or are you very heavily into melee? What kind of range—something spraying like the Autogun series, or something you can run with like the Blaster series, or maybe it's something you save for special occasions, like the Alchemers. Maybe you want to go all-out range, so starting with the Magnum would help, as well as getting armor that speeds up your rate of fire.

3. Do you like bombs, and if so, what kind? Radius damage means Blaster Bomb; status affliction (like poison and fire) mean the Vaporizers; ranged bombing means the Crystal line; and there are various utility bombs. If you become a bomb-heavy knight, you'll want things like the Spiral Demo Suit, which speeds up the bomb charge time.

You can combine some or all of the above, of course. It really depends on what you end up liking as a pattern. Don't try to think about all these at once, it'll just freeze your mind; these are just ideas and examples.

When I was first playing during the Preview, here's what I ended up using to explore what paths I liked:

- Hot Edge, because it could set things on fire, to see if I liked normal speed of damage.
- Beast Basher, which hits big (for a 0-star item) and a bit slower
- Firecracker, a boom-boom bomb that can set things on fire

I couldn't figure out if I liked range until I got a good gun; for me, it happened that the Autogun was the first recipe I came across, but I think getting your hands on a Blaster or a Zapper will help you play with range in general.

Of course, looking stylish is also a consideration. ;) Though that's what armor costumes are for.

This is just a place to start. Part of the fun is seeing how one develops with the recipes at hand and then, later, by choice.

Just to note ~

Additionally, the Drake Scale series of armor has no normal defense, the last I checked. That alone is very costly.

If I was you

First I would figure out which type of monster you have the most difficult time fighting if its all monsters well then....we have to try to get you a set with an overall attack bonus, but if not you then should look at parts of set which gives you a bonus for example:

Dragon Scale Helm - Gives Beast bonus Low (which is great if you are bad vs beast monsters)

then what I would do is have your armor - have another bonus or even some very sexy stats in terms of defense, for example V-sala which gives great fire resistance and a bonus against slime as well.

Finally, you figure out what type of elemental bonuses you wish to have on your shield and boom you have a set of armor you wish to use.

Side-note remember how to stack:

Silvermail + Cold Iron = Very High damage bonus vs undead (Great combo if you know your fighting undead)

Fallen + Divine Avenger = *1 part of fallen helm or body* Gives you damage bous vs fiend High or Very High vs Fiend

I can go on so your weapon choice does matter as well.

My suggestion figure out which monsters you have trouble with then search the wiki or you can even add me in-game (My name is): Njthug and I can help you figure out a great combo set for yourself.
