Why is it that most people do a minimum of 2 explosions with their charge attacks whereas some people do 1-2?

It's a visual bug only, unless there isn't enough room for the explosion (i.e., you're up against a wall). Explosions correlate directly to number of stars. 3* = 1 explosion, 4* = 2 explosions, 5* = 3 explosions.
The same way you can "lose" pulsar shots, only to have them reappear when the (mysteriously invisible) bullet expands.
