Heading into town... lasts forever, and sometimes can't even log in!

I've been having issues ever since I installed the game. It worked fine for a while, and then all of a sudden, I got weird errors. Black screens that resulted in the game freezing and such. Sometimes, I can't log into the game from the starting screen (I use steam), and also, I tend to not be able to join the game. It just says "Heading into Town..." after I select my character, and lasts that way forever. The knight just keeps walking and I cannot get into the main loading screen.

I have no idea what this issue is, but I would love to know if there is a fix for this if anyone else had this problem.

Y'know... I've had the same

Y'know... I've had the same problems. I'm fairly new(a couple weeks new)... and I use a Steam account... but rather than not being allowed to start the game up...... I CAN start the game, but then sometimes after say 3-4 loading screens, I get hung up on a loading screen for as long as 5 minutes, and I randomly get disconnected. I try to join my friends, and they have to suffer.... waiting 5-10 minutes for my connection to load up....

(There are times where I load up screens quickly. So I have no idea if it IS me, or the game itself?)

Luckily I'm able to continue on from where I d/c'd at, otherwise I wouldn't even bother playing this game anymore. Which would suck, cuz I really like it.

Also... sometimes WHILE I'm playing, the game just freezes... I can't move, nor can I hear anything for about 3 full minutes. The game finally regains focus after 3 minutes, and I'm either wedged up into a corner, or I'm dead(from spikes, or enemies.).

It's really bothersome. Hadn't had that much of an issue with the game before. Actually, it JUST started doing this, about 3-4 days ago. I want to figure it's just because they are still trying to fix a few bugs with the game, but are unknowingly creating more bugs.... Since it ran fairly well before the last patch...

*All my stuff is up to date, and I run the bare minimum requirements to play this game, so I'm bound to get the worst parts of it all.*

I have no idea about what video card I have, but that doesn't matter. I've ran the game before and it worked, even after I posted this message. It's just so random when it will and won't work. I don't know what the problem is, but I can't get in now.

Are you sure you have a stable internet connection?
Are you playing during a very busy time of the day or something?

If these problems seem to be random, and nothing has changed on your end, it might be your ISP.
Is there any more information you can give us? Where you are located, wireless router model etc. Anything.

I was thinking it had to do

I was thinking it had to do with my router. I have that Linksys one that everyone seems to have trouble with. But I tried that one fix (By changing the one number to 1458) but it only works for a moment to let me into the game. Any other times I want to play, I have to do it again (change it back to 1500, then back again).

I have no idea what's going on. This happens all the time, at all different times of the day. And yes, I have about 100 MBPS. We rarely ever lose internet.
All other Steam games work well with it.

The router routinely refuses

The router routinely refuses to work with SK, but SK doesn't seem to do this with other routers outside this series.

Nobody really knows what's going on with that, but the issue is Cisco/Linksys' firmware, not the hardware. If you tried installing DD-WRT or something on it, people have reported having great success at that. A word of warning, though: installing new firmware on your router is quite a process, and you need to read the instructions very carefully.

Have you emailed Support to see what they say? Maybe they have another fix by now, who knows. Honestly, that router's firmware never functioned consistently when I had it, even when it was updated. You may just have to look at new firmware options.

It is not a router problem. I got the same issue just now and I thought my PC broke. It seems that the game is broken

Jagd, your router might not

Jagd, your router might not be your problem, but if Gabbiani has that router it is most likely the cause of his/her connection issues.

What kind of router do you have? You need to provide more information, please.

Well, found the source of the issue. I closed out of Yahoo Messnger and a Spyware program, and it works each time. It seems one of those two were conflicting with it. Perhaps you should post this around to see if the other people having this problem are using one of the two? My program is Super AntiSpyware

The Technical Support FAQ

The Technical Support FAQ actually already suggests shutting down antivirus programs when trying to troubleshoot your problem.
Antivirus programs and spyware blockers are notorious for interfering with games and the internet, it's a well known conflict.
Please read the FAQ and try to add those exceptions to your anitvirus/firewalls.

Glad you figured it out.

Nevermind. Now it's doing it

Nevermind. Now it's doing it again. I got in twice before it happened again. I have no idea what is causing this, and I'm not risking killing my router. I have a feeling that their support team will just give me a generic answer to the problem. Even if I said I tried it in my letter to them, they will still respond with it. I guess that's just the feeling that I have.

I am really stumped. Nothing like this has ever happened to me before while trying to run a game.

I have the same problem.

Hello! I'm fairly new to this game, I registered August 25 and haven't had any problems until I had this same issue since yesterday. It just says "heading into town", but whenever I log my account back in, I can see that my "total time played" changes, it's like my character gets into the game but my client is stuck at the character selection screen.

I have fairly good connection and I can't see any reason why my router causes this problem.

Ah, darn I thought you had it.

Seriously, you ought to email support anyway, if only to remind them that the issue is real and still affecting users. There's no way to tell what they'll tell you, so just try asking anyway.

To verify that the issue IS your router, can you plug your computer directly into your modem and see if the game works? If you haven't already made the firewall exceptions, please do so.

Yea, i can only play whenever

Yea, i can only play whenever I create a new knight (play was really laggy) and after I log that created knight back in, I get stuck at the same "heading into town" screen. Yesterday, I was able to access my main character (laggy in-game too) and I had a black screen of death after entering clockwerks and wasn't able to log back in the game... really frustrating. Btw, I'm from the Philippines.

Okay, if many players from

Okay, if many players from your area are having this issue, it might be your Internet service provider messing with your connections.
If you're using a wireless router, what model are you using? If you are plugged directly into your modem and you're still having these problems, it's either your ISP messing with you, or you have some software on your computer that is blocking SK's connection.

uh

I too have that problem. And no noticeable change has been made to my computer. But I got invited and joined a guild before this problem started. Is it that bug again? Strangely enough, I'm in the Philippines too.

///EDIT

I got my friend in Portugal to try some things. He logged in using my account and got into town with no problem. He quit the guild for me and even crafted some things. Back with my computer, I still can't get past 'Heading into Town.' Maybe it is a problem with the router... if it's the provider mine is Smart Broadband.

It's hard for the devs to look into an issue if they don't have a lot of information.
If it really is an ISP-side issue, there may not be a lot they can do, but if it's a conflict with router firmware or antivirus software a fix on their end might be possible. Have you received a response from support yet?

If you could all list the following, that would be great:

Operating system
Graphics card
Router model
Internet service provider
General geographical area
Any antivirus programs, firewall programs, peer blocker programs, etc.

The weirdest thing... I tried

The weirdest thing... I tried logging in as my second knight. It didn't work and was stuck in 'heading to town' so I closed the game, then opened it again. I use a Steam account for the game. When the game opened, it immediately went to the loading screen, the one that goes to Training Camp. Yeah, my Second Knight is unused. There was no logging in or character selection. And I was able to play as my second Knight. If I trying that using my main Knight it doesn't work. I tried it a few times and it works again for my second Knight. One thing I noticed when this happened was well, Win + Tab stopped working and my windows colored changed from a transparent green to an opaque light blue. That suggests Aero closed without any notification.

"I'm sorry to hear you're having trouble - that's definitely frustrating. Have
you filed a bug report at any point after it's happened? You can do that from
the "Heading into town" screen by pressing F2."

That was the reply from the support staff. Perhaps next time we encounter it, we should all send a bug report.

Ah. Okay, then they

Ah. Okay, then they definitely don't have enough information. When you do a F2 bug report, it sends them more data than just your text description of the problem. The next time it happens, everyone should definitely do an F2 report.

It sounds like Rescue Camp is okay for you all, but Haven is not.
Have you all tried plugging directly into your modems to make sure the router is not the issue? I might have missed the part of your posts where you confirmed/denied that.

There was a bug a while ago similar to this, I'm not sure how it was resolved but it WAS resolved. Might be that you were logged into a haven instance that no longer exists or was bugged. F2 reports would be helpful to the support staff.

Strangely, I'm both in the Philippines and with a Linksys router

I experience this problem sometimes too.
I want to believe "the haven instance is borked" theory... but it's probably just probably my ISP popping a few servers.

Anyway, I do some things to solve the problem sometimes...
1. Closing and running the client (sometimes, it takes a lot)
2. Disconnecting from PPPoE and reconnecting (DSL - Bayantel)
3. Restarting the modem (not router)

Alternatively, I'd like to put forward a suggestion to select the haven instance to enter. :D

Discussing solutions

"Alternatively, I'd like to put forward a suggestion to select the haven instance to enter."

This does seems like a possible solution according to the posts I've been reading, and if nothing else it could be used for people to log in into certain havens if they want to meet with people if they know where they are, instead of logging in and then having to join them.

It would be nice to see this get resolved, a friend of mine hasn't been able to enter haven in days...

TF2 and Spiral Knights might

TF2 and Spiral Knights might not use the same internet ports. Being able to play one online game but not another does not mean your ISP still isn't messing with you.
Mosonofbo, you're probably having a different issue and should start your own thread.

Also, there's a promotional event going on, so server traffic might be a little heavy all day today. Also note that a bugfix went out in addition to a content release. I advise everyone to powercycle (unplug) both their router and their modem (plug the modem back in first, and then the router, that just seems to be the better order) if they could get in yesterday but not today.

Again, people, you need to submit an F2 bug report when you reach the "Heading into Town" screen.

Hmm, it's just started doing this on my end as of yesterday after the patch. It was fine for over a month, but now the game misbehave very frequently on load screens. I haven't installed anything new into my system recently but evidently most people aren't having this problem, leaving me rather puzzled.

When looking at the data SK

When looking at the data SK sends, it looks like clear text java commands. That could be a reason why it'll fall under security suites and deep packet inspection since it resembles web traffic.

So uh, when I make Steam

So uh, when I make Steam validate the Integrity of the Spiral Knight's game cache there's always some files that can't be validated, about 109 MB. I still can't play though, and now the sounds are gone. Also my second Knight can no longer be played, I think it's because he's no longer at the Camp.

Started seeing this

I started seeing this issue yesterday (Oct 15). Last successful login was Oct 14. Now I get permanently stuck (30+ minutes) at the Heading into Town message. I also can't create a new character, I get stuck at the Creating Character message.

Don't think that this is the router or ISP because my wife can login fine plugged into the same router.

The problem has nothing to do with computer hardware, I'm having the same problem on two of my computers with completely different hardware but on the same network.

What happens... I log in, try to select a character, long freeze, then back to login screen saying i've been disconnected from the server.
