I'm finding that if I hit a howlitzer with a charge attack on my fireburst brandish and one shot him like a boss, the skull, instead of launching at me, explodes immediately, damaging me before I can even put up my shield. (I usually hold the shield key as I'm releasing the attack so it'll pop up right away) On the other hand if I take him down with a regular sword hit, holding the shield, the skull will bump away and then launch after me.

I'm not sure which is the intended behaviour, though if there's a vote I'll cast mine for the latter.

You can explode Howlitzer heads by hitting them after they break loose. So be careful :P

Yeah, I wasn't sure if it was intended behaviour or not, as it felt kind of like a glitch.

I think it wouldn't be out of character for the skull to have a short invulnerable period, sort of like when dust zombies are crawling out of the ground. It would make their behaviour a little more consistent with their description, i.e. the skull launching at you and exploding, rather than exploding instantly before you even see it appear.

A quick invulnerability period for them could be perfectly valid, as multi-hit swords make for the head exploding on you inevitable.

Additionally, a little supportive tidbit:
Skellies did not always have that immunity during their spawn animation; it was easy to shatter their bones during their lengthy, oblivious rise to the surface, hence its presence of now.

Thanks, people! Now I know why these heads always exploded immediately upon released a charged leviathan attack on them.
Anyways: carry a gun with you. Always. These puppies are much easier to deal with using a gun than a sword (funny how I can one-charge-kill any other puppy with Combuster, and have to deal with these puppies using my gun).
