I've looked everywhere (with the exception of in the forum history, but it shouldn't be buried as I think it's important), and I can't seem to find out what the components of the gate level icons mean. I figured out that the background color = the element of that section of the level, and the color of the icon represents the monster type (verification needed?), but what do the gear and monsters icons mean? I know it has something to do with the type of level (shield for arena, clover for treasure, grave for graveyard).

I think some kind of instruction in the game (preferrably in the bazaar or accessible from the gate map menu) would be awesome, especially for new players who are confused. Thanks.

The wiki is quite useful for information about the game (big wiki button at the top of the page)

That link should help answer your question.

I've already looked through

I've already looked through the wiki. It doesn't say anything about what the symbols actually mean.

The symbols as noted by the wiki are the 1-3, 5-7, 9-12, 14-17, 19-22, 24+ depth themes. Gremlin = lots of gremlin maps. Slime = lots of slime infested maps, etc. Shock, Frost, Fire, and Poison mean those maps will try to inflict those on you.

slate i dont think that those

slate i dont think that those are the icons they mean. the icons shown (gear/grass/clover/shield) that indicate the types of levels when you look at the gate map (individual levels for each strata / depth). right?

maybe we need to start just enumerating the different ones.

- grass (sky islands?)
- clover (treasure)
- shield (arena)
- tower (castle levels)
- gear (clockworks?)
- building (city themed)
- headstone (graveyard)
- compass/elevator symbol (terminal)
- house (subtown)

anything else? isnt there a ghost one, or is it just the graveyard/headstone

also correct me if i'm wrong, im just going off the top of my head

The ghost one has three ghost

The ghost one has three ghost heads on it with their sharp little teeth.

Oh there is also the ? level. I guess that means random.

monstrous icon

There's also an icon with sort of monsters' heads (like in wolver's den or prognosis: symbiosis).

@djbiznatch, good coverage of

@djbiznatch, good coverage of the gate map icon types. Grass actually means a green level, such as the sky islands or the jigsaw valley. Expect possibility of slime, definitely wolvers and lumber (though I call the latter affectionately "@#$@ tree beasts").

@merethif, yeah, the three monster heads specify wolver or slime dens.

For the meanings of the '>' and '<' symbols, I think it means that the next destination will slowly switch from one side to the other in the direction of the '<'. If you wait long enough when you finish the level, you can see the little monitor change from one icon to the next. (Or at least, you could in the preview; I haven't checked now.) And at the very least, you will be shown what the next destination is.

With '?' symbols, you won't know ahead of time what your destination is, and the order is randomized. It's like a lottery; sometimes you win the Treasure Vault, and sometimes you get the Graveyard (and those @#$@ phantoms). These levels tend to be high-yield levels in terms of crowns or loot, and all but the Treasure Vault are dangerous. I've noticed that the Treasure Vault and Graveyard never appear with '>' or '<'.

We've been trying to figure

We've been trying to figure out how to document the gate levels, including the icons. :)

Gears are definitely clockworks. Grass are also the Sky Islands. There is also this one, which is a mini-boss level. It's similar to arenas. The last gate icon is a skull (similar to the skull that appears on your name when you die), which is where you fight Vanaduke.

Otherwise, I think you got everything correct. :)

@ajericho - that sounds about

@ajericho - that sounds about right with the symbols. i take it the gate map indicates the next level (one after current) for those depths with the arrows.

i think i remember seeing a branching path for the ? mark levels. that would make sense.

its cool though, i never tried waiting at the gate.. would be nice to sorta handpick the next mission by waiting.. though i wonder how quickly it cycles.

makes sense too that the question mark levels would be the one with the treasure vaults

@djbiznatch, Yes, the red

@djbiznatch,

Yes, the red line will trace through the path you've taken and to the next level. A red circle indicates the level you're currently at. And if you stare at a Gate Map long enough, the red line will cycle through levels.

"Long" in this case means a few to several minutes. Not exactly something to do with a party, but when you're soloing, and the next level is one of those arenas that always spawn a Trojan in the first room, it can pay to camp out by the gate until it changes to something a bit less risky. Sometimes reaching the next Basil for more advanced recipes is more important than getting extra crowns or loot.
