Hello all, I've only been playing Spiral Knights for about 3 days. I'm a little confused on the correct way to get my 4* adn 5* equipment. I noticed at gear levels 5 and 10 you gain variants on your equipment and these sometimes carry forward when you upgrade them via alchemy. Should I be leveling each piece of equipment to 10 before upgrading to take advantage of these variants or am i wasting an incredible amount of time and energy?

Those variants disappear when you craft it. Say your 4-star bomb got a Medium charge time reduction because it's lvl 10. If you upgrade it, your 5-star weapon will charge slower than it did when it was 4-star bomb until it reaches lvl 10 again.
That's no reason not to upgrade to the next level as soon as you can though, it'll do more damage than the previous one.

Any bonus your gear gets from heating will be lost during crafting because your old gear is a material needed to produce the new gear.
3* and below gear can be crafted without any heat at all (can be crafted from unbound gear). 4* gear needs its 3* predecessor to be heated to L5. 5* gear needs its predecessor to be heated to L10.
Also, note that there are many deadend worthless items. The best way to go about things is to look at the 5* gear you want to end up with, then figure out what you need to get you there.

ok, ive been playing spiral knights for like probably a week and i know this is probably an incredibly stupid question but....
does leveling up, for example, a 3* gear to level 10 get u the next 4* gear on the alchemy path?
