Question About Steam Accounts

I'm actually not a new recruit, but this seemed like an appropriate place to ask this question. I first made my account with Steam - does that make it impossible to play the game online without Steam using the same character? I think it does, which stinks, because I have a computer that I have access to more frequently, but Steam isn't installed, and can't be because I don't have permission to do so. I'd really like to be able to play more often, using just the internet-based client, but if I can't, I'll make do.

All answers appreciated, and I apologize for the lengthy rant.

I'm afraid so. You would need to have Steam installed to play the Steam created character.

You can't play the Steam account on a non-Steam installation.

...make an alt :(

That's what I did too so I can play SK at an internet cafe if I feel like... obviously those internet cafes don't have Steam...

sadly, playing via steam also

sadly, playing via steam also seems to bump up the energy prices. I made one purchase of energy for 3500+25% at beta, the next time i thought about buying it due to the special packages, I had linked with steam and noticed the prices were higher than the advertised price on the in-game pictures.
this goes the same when i log into any other account on this computer. If it wasn't for that i probably would have bought more energy.

Hmm...

3500 CE always cost about $10. And I have a Steam and non-Steam account, and the prices seem to be the same. (I didn't get a +25% beta bonus though.)

when you're using a computer

when you're using a computer that has logged in on a steam account it seems to remember that when you log in on a non-steam account. thus "this goes the same when i log into any other account on this computer."

its easiest to see when on a steam account since it displays an image showing what the price is meant to be.

the +25% was when they wiped the accounts afterwards before the 'preview event' started (i think thats what it was called)
all energy purchased before the accounts were wiped was restored with a 25% bonus

Huh...

My Battle Pack is also $25 on both Steam and non-Steam accounts. But then again I live in the Philippines.

Do you live in California or something? I think Steam or SK recognizes that you are in a place where a sales tax should be applied? :(

The tax can only be applied

The tax can only be applied by Steam if the player buying EC lives in the same state as company. That state would be Washington, as that's where the headquarters of Steam is located. :) Although I don't think there is a tax for putting money into the Steam wallet, since you aren't technically buying anything...

Really?

Maybe what you said applies, but the player lives where Three Rings does?

i'm in UK actually. but yeah,

i'm in UK actually. but yeah, the fact that linking the accounts increased the price of energy has made me not want to buy it.

Thank you all for your

Thank you all for your replies, much appreciated. I usually just play on Steam, and found the game there first. If I knew that playing on Steam would be so limiting, I would've just gone to the site. I'll do more research next time.

I might make another account, but I've already put a lot of effort into this one, and I like the name Daemonos, too, and don't want to risk losing it. Maybe Three Rings will make a way to revert the link, who knows. I can be hopeful.

And yes, the internet café thing is what I was talking about XD

@hobo: Why don't you file a support ticket regarding the inflated $$$ prices in UK Steam? I don't think anyone else has experienced it. Maybe a dev/GM can explain this "problem".

Can other UK players confirm this evil price increase?

There is a huge discrepancy

There is a huge discrepancy across the board with most games regarding pricing. It has been talk for quite awhile now & became more noticeable when we first started trading items for games many moons ago before they made it..cough..official.

It is possible to play a steam linked account without steam. You've to think about how steam identifies itself at the Spiral Knights servers. It sends steam:xxxxxxxxxx as a username, while xxxxxx means a large identification Number, but it's NOT your steam ID. Although you still have to enter a password, haven't tested if it does matter, but it works with your steam account password. I found out my identification number through a bug, but it seems it isn't really reproducible, I just started steam, while it said "logging in"(don't know that it says in the englisch version of the game, in the german version it says "Anmelden...") I klicked on the "Use steam account" Button, and at the character selection screen I klicked on "Back" or "Leave" (in the german version it just says "Verlassen") and I suddenly saw steam:xxxxxxxxxx where I would normally enter my steam username. (xxxxxx means, like I said a large identification number and I don't want to tell you mine.) I tried to login with it, but I needed a password, so I just used the one from my steam account and Voilà, it worked. The server just thinks that you've logged in via steam, so I suggest it works even with the non-steam Spiral knights. I can't guarantee it works for you, it seems you have to klick in the right moment on the "Use steam account" Button. If it somebody wants to try it, could he write here if it worked? And if you need your real steam password to login, or if it also accepts 12345. I'm just too lazy to test it.

It doesn't work because...

I have experienced seeing the steam:xxxxxxx username many times. And I've seen many different numbers, so it's probably a session ID which probably varies for each time you log in Steam.

If probably expires if you log off Steam or go elsewhere so no dice there.

i was under the impression

i was under the impression that that ID is permanent for your account, various servers use that ID for verification of who you are when you connect to them so they can determine any special privileges that may be active on said server.
Just checking to see if i can login with what steamidfinder says...

ok, i can login using my steam ID, but it behaves as if i have no characters if i do that. logging out and trying again via steam itself...
interesting, looks as if you have a separate account if you login with your steam id/password. haven't attempted to create a knight on it, maybe someone else can try? i'm booked for dead island :D

I'll definitely give it a try, just gotta find out my Steam ID first. I'm pretty good with computers, if I figure it out I'll post a FAQ.

Beth-Bathory
Alright, I figured out how to

Alright, I figured out how to locate your Steam ID. It's relatively easy, and the ID never changes - the guys at Steam can't even change it. So, in theory, it should work. However, after putting in the ID and correct password, it starts the "Create New Knight" thing.. So sad, because I am so, so close to accomplishing this >.<
