Weird FPS bug: FPS raising when I run out of space on HDD

Typically my FPS around town is around 60 frames per second (doesn't depend much on settings or resolution, by the way), sometimes it goes down to 23-27 for example in the place where I appear if I go from Town square (AH house) to Arcade.
PC specs: Intel core2quad q9550 @ 3.4 ghz, 4 gb ram, Nvidia GTX 560 with latest drivers. I play with min settings, 1280x800 to maximize FPS, old habit. 100 FPS is makes games more enjoyable than great visuals.

Now, when I record a bit of the game and suddenly run out of space on the drive D where the game is installed (steam version), my FPS jumps up to 100-120 where it would typically be 50-60. Funny, isn't it? FPS goes UP, not down, as its expected to.

But at the same time I can't record videos, so keeping HDD full is not an option.

Help, please.

Does your recording software

Does your recording software run all the time? And are you sure its not the program enforcing an FPS cap to enable proper frame capture? With no room do recording, it might be changing the program's behavior.

Yes, I'm sure FRAPS isn't

Yes, I'm sure FRAPS isn't locking my FPS at 30 when its not recording. It shows a number in a corner of the screen, otherwise I wouldn't know what my FPS is and this topic wouldn't exist in the first place.
I'm keeping FRAPS alive all the time, but I only record interesting things.

Just a random, unsupported stab

I feel like due to the low memory space, the computer decides to allocate more resources to SK in order to sustain performance.

FRAPS doesn't limit your

FRAPS doesn't limit your frame rate unless you tell it to (Tick the "Lock frame rate while recording." option) and even then it limits the maximum frame rate.

FRAPS, when recording can and always does have an impact on performance and greatly exasperates situations where your computer struggles to maintain a decent FPS. It's to do with how FRAPS hooks into the video renderer that games use as well as the performance of your hard drive. Most of the negative effect would be eliminated if you used a SSD hard drive or, as mentioned, stopped using FRAPS.
