With the introduction of the Catalyzer line, we got a gun with essentially a charge/normal combo attack. Fire out some charge orbs, hit with a regular shot and BOOM! Hours of fun (if only I had one...).

It occurs to me that adding a charge/normal combo to the sword side of things might also be rewarding. I find that for the most part there's some swords I only use regular attacks with (Cutter line, I'm looking in your direction), and some swords that I mostly use a kite-and-charge technique with (hello Brandish line). It'd be neat to have a sword that encourages mixing things up.

For example, have the sword accumulate a charge by landing normal hits, to power up an otherwise weak charge attack.

Alternately, have a sword where successfully landing a charge attack gives you a buff on normal attacks that tapers off for 5 or so seconds.

there are some issues with the catalyzer, namely the time it takes to attach charged orbs and detonating them before your allies mow them all down.

Catalyzer charges definitely

Catalyzer charges definitely suck, but the idea of integrating normal and charge attacks could make some interesting weapons.

As a not at all well thought out example, if the Cutter gathered counters with every hit you land on an enemy that sped up the execution of the next charge attack, there would be a reason to use the charge. Cutters are still terrible though.

As an experimental weapon,

As an experimental weapon, they could have the charge attack inflict a new status effect that will weaken monster defense against that class of weapon. Like 10-15% damage bonus on top of any other applicable bonuses. The trade off being the charge attack doing less damage with a narrower strike zone, but charge slightly faster, and the status effect limited to 5-7 seconds. This is made with intent to focus higher damage against fewer targets at a time.

You can also breath life into the cutter lines by having a charge attack that buffs yourself, and lets the blade splinter a small amount of damage to nearby monsters with each normal hit.

Whatever you think of

Whatever you think of integrating you should keep in mind: if its based on timing, it will be hard to realize for players with lags.
Ever played a game (most likely console one) where you had a short period of time to press specific button? Well, its the same, except you have to press the button some time before it shows you "press button". Impossible unless you know you're supposed to press it in advance, and know when to press.
Same thing as with shield and devilites: if you don't predict them throwing something at you, you won't be able to shield in time. If you can't attack with a weapon unless you "predict" when you have to press buttons, such weapon will become unpredictable and no fun to play with.
