Player hazing?

So I guess I'm kind of a noob (played for 3 days) but the strangest thing happened to me while I was chilling in the bazaar looking through the wiki. Some guy came up to me, gave me a green shard and 1cr, then called me dumb and ran off. A few minutes later, the same thing happened, this time with 10 cr. I was kind of confused, and a nearby player explained that I was being hazed for being a beggar. Apparently this kind of thing is common.
This kept happening, with increasing amounts of cr each time. The last time it happened I got 50,000 cr and a sword with 2 augments on it. Each time I got insulted, called a beggar, or whatever. Now with normal trolling I tend to either ignore it or countertroll, but all I could do this time was laugh. I didn't feel insulted in the slightest, nor did I feel the normal urge to 'put these players in their place'. I continued to be good manner despite the insults, and continued to reap in the benefits. When it was over I was actually sad because I was actually so entertained by the event!
But I have to ask, is this normal? I understand that there are a lot of beggars in the game, and they are the target of a lot of hazing or insults, but is it normal for a player with bad gear to be insulted on his gear and called a beggar, even without any sort of begging whatsoever?
It's possibly the strangest sort of trolling I've ever encountered in a game, a sort of elitism towards noobs not because they're annoying, but because they actually have just put less time into the game. Normally in mmos, the insults are derived towards the noobs being clueless or not understanding the economy or screwing a party over. I'm actually amazed at how this sort of trolling works.

you may have just been gifted for the lulz. I know there's a lot of players who toss random trade requests around, but either no thanks them, or tell them to eff off.

Of course you realize that you are being Honey Glazed by the trolls so you taste better to the upcoming Candlestick Keep nasties.
More likely though, people who try to be helpful or are seen with their hard earned high level gear are often pestered and stalked by the needy newbs they help. Therefore, if some stranger gifts you something then insults you, perhaps it is their way of genuinely helping newbs while throwing anti-stalking protection in the form of an insult.
This form of altruism comes from the fable of the Bird, Cow and Cat:
A little bird was flying south for the winter. It was so cold that the bird froze and fell to the ground in a large field. While it was lying there, a cow came by and dropped some dung on it. As the frozen bird lay there in the pile of cow dung, it began to realize how warm it was. The dung was actually thawing him out! He lay there all warm and happy, and soon began to sing for joy.
A passing cat heard the bird singing and came to investigate. Following the sound, the cat discovered the bird under the pile of cow dung, and promptly dug him out and ate him!
The morals of this story are:
*Not everyone who drops crap on you is your enemy.
*Not everyone who gets you out of crap is your friend.
*And when you're in deep crap, keep your mouth shut!

Trolling with gifts? :D I like the sound of that! I might have to craft some gifts of my own to troll people with.
You guys figure some Strikers, Nightblades, Fiery Vaporizer Mk IIs and Freezing Vaporizer Mk IIs (all of which are 3-star) would be appropriate to troll a few beginning players with? Or am I going at this with the wrong angle in mind?

Sometimes I go into a Snarbolax run looking for new players and tell them if they kill him without dying (and me not doing anything just shielding) then I'll give them a Brandish or an Owlite Shield.

This has to be the weirdest
This has to be the weirdest thing I've ever heard. It sounds really stupid to actually give a beggar money game-wise.
I mean... in other MMOs I've played, you just troll the beggar, you don't even give him anything except some snarky comment. I remember this one time I was semi-AFK in town when some guy shoves a trade box in my face and asks for some "gold plz kthx." I typed a number up in the top, like I was gunna give him a couple gold, and closed the trade box. The guy thought I gave him money and was all like, "Gee, thnx" and off he left. Funniest moment I think I've ever had.
I have to wonder now though, if that's the reason why my alt gets random trade messages when I afk to read something. I always ignore random strangers trading me.

Reminds me of those stories
Reminds me of those stories of people buying the coffee for the person behind them in line, resulting in a whole chain of people buying coffee for one another. But in a game like that? This is the first time I've heard of it.
It sounds really nice though. Also, maybe I should start equipping newbie equipment every time I enter Haven now.
