Materials are really not worth much.
Energy prices are currently so high it isn't worth playing unless you've got mist energy to use.
Solution: Make the materials rarer and crowns more frequent.

Printing more money makes it worth less. Ever heard of it? Same thing with more crowns: energy prices will simply increase faster.
