i was reading the thread about "grey feather or divine" and one of the posts said "no normal damage defense is bad, even in tier 3" or something lke that. So i was all like dont monsters do normal anyways so what does he mean by EVEN in tier 3? im tier 2 so i dont know. so i searched the wiki and it said monsters only do normal i tier 1 and partly normal in tier 2. it did not mention anything about tier 3. so im confused. please help!
is there normal damage in tier 3?
I overlooked that fact but now that u mention it it could have been a typo.
Gremlin's hammer and the Trojans sword both do normal damage in tier3.
Most attacks in T3 are still split-damage; pretty much the only ones that do pure elemental/shadow/piercing are turret bullets (when fired by other monsters like Kats, too). The others are retrode lasers and... I can't think of any other pure typed attacks. Shock does pure elemental, though. Some attacks are pure normal, too.
If you use armor without normal defense, you give up receiving a defense against 50% of most attacks and only really benefit against attacks which were already pure elemental/shadow/piercing - e.g. only having elemental defense against a mechaknight is more or less the same as having normal defense and no elemental. Because shadow and elemental are both less common than normal, giving up normal to have both elemental and shadow defense actually means you're less defended against more attacks.
When the game was first released, everything did normal damage. Very few things didn't do normal damage, most notably Gun Puppies which were pure elemental. Then there was an update that gave many attacks Shadow or Piercing damage. So that this wouldn't affect newer players, all attacks in Tier 1 attacks are normal. Tier 2 monster attacks are about half normal damage and half special damage (and some creatures that don't have a special attack damage just do pure normal.) Then later, another update gave more monsters Elemental damage. Then just recently piercing/shadow turrets were added to the game.
In Tier 3, it was thought that monsters would only do special damage and not use normal. We quickly found that there was still plenty of normal damage in Tier 3. Zombie swipe/bite attacks are about half normal/half shadow. Vanaduke's mace and Trojan attacks are pure normal. The blast jelly and rock jelly lunges are also normal since they lack those ugly spikes. Lumbers were also pure normal until recently, I think in T3 they are now mostly elemental if not pure elemental.
On the whole Divine Set topic... for a while people were thinking that Divine Set would be the ultimate armor for T3 because one won't need Normal defense. It is also occasionally asked in this forum if it would be perfect for FSC (lots of Shadow/Fire res). Obviously, that's not the case on either count :)
There's a full list of creatures that deal some normal damage here:

Well the ingame tip is confusing. But there is probably a simple solution behind all this:
T1: Everything deals 100% normal damage.
T2: Everything deals 50% normal damage and 50% their programmed damage (even if it's also normal)
T3: Everything deals 100% their programmed damage (even if it's normal AND shadow)
For example a zombie from FSC would:
T1: Deals 100% normal damage
T2: Deals 50% normal damage and 50% of the damage it would normally do, wich means shadow AND normal.
this means in T2 it would deal 75% (50% + 25%) normal damage and 25% shadow.
T3: Deals 50% normal damage and 50% shadow. Like the second 50% from T2 i just explained.
I guess this could be pretty right.
Short answer, Yes there is normal damage in tier 3.
The duke's mace and slag guards both do normal damage for example. I believe split xxxxxx/normal damage is still really common too in T3.
