The gates have cycled, and it appears our lucky day fellow knights! After a day of waiting, Candlestick Keep is now playable! Of course, with it fresh off the roller, the wiki page (Which I took the liberty to make) is not fully ready. Because of which, finding information on what is about to eat your face is going to be hard. I, and everyone, would appreciate it if you would contribute to the page. Have fun with whatever lurks in there! :)
Candlestick Keep, Released!!!
FANTASTIC ATMOSPHERE! On par with the Snarby floors in my opinion, and those are my favorite floors even if I don't play them much. The candlestick mechanic works well. Very well done, I hope to see more floors come out with the level of atmosphere this and the other fairly new additions (not new anymore... Snarby and IMF) have had.
Gunshots, or at least Polaris, go straight through the Grimalkins. Also there seems to be a small window when you can shield bump it, when it pops out of the ground before it opens its mouth. This is mostly useful for if it spawns right on top of you. And does not always work... *rubs the bite on my butt* ouch...

Grimalkins can be shunted by pulsar explosions. But the bullets don't connect with them like phantoms, meaning you have to place the shots so they explode at the right spot. Get it wrong, and you can shunt them into your own face.
sloooowly uploading video. It's only tier 1 though so nothing special. Still sadly I got hurt more than expected lol...
EDIT: -.- my video is laggy...I was laggy but whatever...I'll let the usual video people make better ones XD

Edit: Apparently hearing the music I heard was a bug, so you can ignore this.
I like the music; it's new for the map, too. Checked just now, was added in the patch
spiral knights/rsrc/sound/music/castle_ambient and castle_action, for anybody that wants to hear it out of game. If you're on steam, steam/steamapps/common is where you'll find the spiral knights folder.
For some reason, the music reminds me more of a winter wonderland feel than creepy castle, but it's still good.

It's not new music.
Odd, my computer reports the file was last updated in the patch a couple days ago, and I've certainly never heard it before - it's not used in the crimson keep, jelly palace or firestorm citadel, and those are the only other castle areas to begin with.
The music should be the undead theme. If it's not, it's a bug.
Then I've probably encountered a bug, which at least partially explains why replicant said what he said.
Next time I have energy I'll check if it happens again, it might've just been a one-off error.
they were a of of fun and just the right level of challenging (Go for the extra treasure rooms, those monsters can't catch you!)
Also, ive noticed u can shield bump them a bit before they attack you
Don't try to solo them at first. You can get trapped in a room with NO way out, if you aren't careful about the timing of lighting the candles. Wish I had known this before I went and wasted CE going to check them out.
I like the atmosphere, but gameplay-wise... Looks like a big disappointment. Grimalkins can be easily dodged as they're slow as hell and bad at turning. Kats? Right, seen it at Scarlet Fortress. Undead and Howlitzers? Nothing special either. A couple of arena-like rooms could fix it in terms of suspense (and crowns/heat since Candlestick Keep doesn't get you lots of those) probably, but as it is now... Annoying. Just annoying.
Just did both the tier 3 levels.
*Atmosphere is fantastic, probably my favourite so far
*Doesn't give many crowns (Abouy as much as Jigsaw Valley seemingly) but it does seem to give quite a bit of heat
*Grimalkins are pretty easy to avoid unless you don't realize you're in the dark
*Sort of challenging in certain points due to cramped rooms with both kats and howlitzers, but nothing too difficult
*No 'battle' rooms like most unique depths have.
Like manliness said I think what the levels are lacking atm is some sort of arena-esque battle. Too many would ruin the atmosphere I think, but I wouldn't mind at least one. Overall I really like it though, nice variation compared to most depths. As it stands Undead stratums are now the most ineresting between graveyards, candlestick & scarlet fortress.
loving the lvls, its so 'fun' again =)
I like having to put in a smidgen of tactical work to get thru the levels. Unfortunately, I ran one of these levels the first time with my wife DLing some giant file. I ended up so lagged out..like 3 seconds lagged...that I died 3 times. :(
I really love these levels. I recorded a blind run of the stage in tier 2 with plenty of derping against the Grimalkins, I'll link it when it's done uploading.
Just did some more runs, turns out there are sometimes 'battle rooms'. It's just been randomly generated they aren't guruanteed. I'm liking this the more and more I run it.
...if in any tier, there are unreachable zombie totem rings intersecting with candlelight? So you have a choice, get eaten by grimalkins or wake the undead?
I will be disappointed if not and will have to post a Suggestion.
Oh, and I almost forgot:
GeminiDreams posted:
"Initial reports on big ghosts (from T2):"
"-They can bite through shields."
I'm pretty sure that's intentional. The patch notes said they can bite through shields.
Low heat + Low crown = Avoiding at all costs
I just ran candlestick keep for the first time. My first impressions:
1) Good atmosphere. I felt afraid to step out of the light, and that's how it should be.
2) Candlestick keep forces players and monsters into close proximity, and that makes the levels difficult for gunners. (But, gunners can handle them.) (=
3) Gremlkins appear to do fixed damage. This is ok, but it might cause them to do too much damage in T1. I didn't play T3 candlestick keep yet, but my suspicion is that they don't do enough damage in T3.
4) Gremlkins can abuse the camera angle. If you're not paying attention and you're in the dark for a while you might get bit from beyond the bottom of the screen.
Enjoying the new levels so far - a different play dynamic to the usual levels which makes a refreshing change.
I wonder if fictionally Moorcraft Manor is part of Candlestick keep - they have the same look.
Initial reports on big ghosts (from T2):
-They can bite through shields.
-I've confirmed they get sucked into Vortex. I presume from this that Bananabox pulls them
-They don't do thattt much damage
-Move and attack somewhat slowly
- - - -
-Some treasure/mineral rooms are completely in the dark
Overall good design, I like them. Can't wait to see the tier 3 version, especially with the orange candles probably in the fire one
