A Treatise: Change Pulsar/Blast Bomb.

As it stands now, these two weapons, and all of their upgrades, are the most problematic, chaotic weapons in the game, and they have the least possible synergy with group play.

They are fantastic weapons (the pulsar guns anyway), and for solo play they allow a tremendous amount of safety.
However, with a group, they offer nothing but uncooperative gameplay, stress, and the resulting high blood pressure.

Why does this happen, you ask?

I remember a "Bomber" thread on the forums awhile back, which put it very succinctly, describing the Nitronome as a "Blue Screen of Death".

The Pulsar does the same same thing.

And it's not even a matter of merely not seeing a damn thing every other second. It's more specific.
It's the fact that you can't see attack animations. And that means if you're melee you don't know when you put up your shield.

I was a gunner for a long time. I used an Alchemer because I wanted something I knew I could largely spam in the presence of swordies without messing anyone up. Now that I use a sword, I find that I just plain can't engage. If there are pulsars or blast bombs going off it's much safer to stand back and watch, than to run in and get walloped because I didn't know an attack was incoming. And this is while practicing the safer combo - 1 for fast shielding.

Most experienced gunners will tell you that it's a matter of practice, but that only works for keeping yourself safe. You're still wrecking havoc on your group.

And so, in conclusion, I've been very patient, but as I'm about to the point where I'm ready to auto-kick anyone in a pug that I see pull out a Nitronome or a Polaris, I figured it was worth bringing my stance to the forums.

While I can understand

While I can understand getting lost in the explosions, at the very least I wouldn't want the pulsar line changed. As chaotic as it is, several times I've been saved by a team mate pulling one out and blasting enemies apart with it.

An amount of the onus here is

An amount of the onus here is on the players, I think; it's up to them to realise that firing their explode-o-cannon into a hectic melee is potentially going to mess things up. Of course, the same simple fix that the Nitrome could sorely do with - having the opacity of the blast effect knocked down to 70% or so - would work wonders here. It'd still obscure some of the action but it wouldn't be the "oh %$&@ it not again" kick-attractor that it is now.

Sigh

I can't speak for bombs, but the Pulsar line does not need to be changed (fundamentally... I think it does need a damage nerf).

You're not supposed to spam the explosion; it's very situational especially in groups. If a party member is spamming it incorrectly, tell them they're doing it wrong and/or remove them.

There are several tactics that the Pulsar line opens up for gunners that they would not have otherwise, and taking away that ability just because most people don't know what they're doing isn't right.

But if you're going to do that, let's take away the Calibur's knockback. And Shivermist's ability to clog the sides of arenas. And shield bumping... it's dangerous!

The problem isn't mainly

The problem isn't mainly damage or knockback. It's a graphical problem. Making mobs briefly invisible means that you can't tell if they're attacking. Bad players who wouldn't dodge anyway may not notice the problem, but suddenly getting hit a lot by mobs that would otherwise almost never hit you, because some idiot teammate is spamming a pulsar, is really annoying. The alternative is getting out of the way and seeing if the pulsar-spamming idiot can solo, which is also annoying.

Yes

It's a disruptive weapon in the wrong hands, but as a trade-off serves a unique and powerful purpose.

If you're in a group, you're supposed to use the unexapanded shots or find an enemy no one else is working on, or corner an enemy and then move on, etc.

Yes, it's annoying if an idiot has one, but again, that's a player problem.

That said, if you did want to correct the graphical "issue," how would you go about it without making it look silly?

Own a gigawatt. Spam like crazy. Spam usually to keep monsters in a room/corner. Spam on gun puppies. Spam to make gremlins and wolvers dodge.

Never spam mechaknights! Dont let them pull up their shields, but with their shields up it helps slow mechaknigths down.

Never had spam, what's it taste like?

@WindOwl Perhaps add a decent

@WindOwl

Perhaps add a decent level of transparency to the explosion so things can be seen through it, or draw the monster's attack lines above the other animation layers.

Or they could change the animation altogether; perhaps with some gaps in the explosion so the player can still see inside it.

I like the pulsar and nitronome, but apparently the main complaints are 'idiots can't use it properly' and 'I can't see'. One of those can be fixed without changing the gameplay, and the other is just a litmus test for bad players.

Actually, mecha knights are prime targets for Pulsar spam. Shoot once, they put up their shield, wait half a second, shoot the whole clip, and they get hit.

That's on one of them. On groups, like in arenas, you just spam at them and they die.

When my friend and I use our

When my friend and I use our pulsar, we use it defensively. To move back and push things away from enemies.

When put into the hands of someone even slightly competent, and has even a small clue on the works of teamwork, It's an amazing gun for pushing enemies away from friend when they're getting swarmed, and not in a way that would be positive. (Aka: Surrounded with low health, blocking with an almost broken shield.)

Just because the weapon can be used badly doesn't mean it can't be used well.

I've been killed by Levi users more then I can count because charge attacks slam all the monsters right in my face from off screen, and they're already attacking so whoops take a hit, but that doesn't mean it cant be used well. Sure, there's stupid people, but it's not a stupid mechanic.

I love the gun, but

I love the gun, but definitely agree with people who are blinded by it. Making the explosion semi-transparent or shorter is my recommendation. :)

+1 to blast transparencies

I can account for party member spam (to a certain degree), but I'd love to see what's hitting me.
