I keep having a problem where the game, at random times, freezes and then becomes unresponsive. I try and close the window and force shut down Java, but neither responds to any attempt. The only way I can shut Java down or close the now frozen game window is to shut down my computer. I'm running on a laptop with these specs: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit (6.1, Build 7600) (7600.win7_gdr.101026-1503), Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU P8600 @ 2.40GHz (2 CPUs), ~2.4GHz. Other information provided upon request.
Game crashes, but refuses to close?
Im having this problem too, Ive tried everything to try to fix it. Updating java, Cleaning out the older versions of java, Playing it windowed with compatibility mode on, updating my graphics drivers. Nothing has worked. And I cant get the task manager up because the computer becomes completely unresponsive and i have shut it down every time. These are my specs: Windows XP, AMD Athlon 64 Processor 2.4GHz, 2gigs of RAM, and a Nvidia GeForce 9800 GT Graphics card. I would really like to keep playing this game, I enjoy the hell out of it but I cant keep playing if this keeps happening. I just want to know what I have to do.
Yes, latest version, and yes.
I cannot shut it down even through the task manager. I open it up, click "end task", click yes, and then nothing happens.
This happened to me as well, I restarted my computer to get rid of it but havent gotten it since. Not sure what caused it

Ive been sending bug reports and such. I sent them an email today with my projectx log in it, well see if that brings any new light to the situation.
Cinnabar, switch to the process tab in Task Manager and kill the Java process.
A new patch just went out, please let us know if your situations have changed at all when the severs come back up.
Similar situation, as the game will randomly crash with a Display Driver crash notifier in the corner of my desktop. I can kill the process with Task Manager, and no, none of the patches this week including tonight's fixed the issue.
OS: Win7 Ultimate 32 Bit
CPU: Intel Core2 Q6600 @ 2.4 GHz
Memory: 4 GB
Vid Card: Radeon 4600 HD
Latest drivers for the card, and latest Java.
With mine I cant even get my task manager up, my computer totally locks up.
Those unable to bring up task manager, I assume you are running full screen and when the game crashes, its not letting go of the display. This might help you. Create a new shortcut on your desktop to the following target:
taskkill.exe /F /T /IM javaw.exe
(just copy and paste the whole line in)
name the shortcut something like "kill java", or "abandon cradle" or whatever you want.
Rightclick on the new shortcut and choose properties, go to the shortcut tab. Click on the "shortcut key" box and press y. Windows will automatically add CTRL and ALT. Click OK. (you can choose any key you want here just make sure its not one windows uses. y is safe)
Now when spiral knights freezes up, holds CTRL and ALT and press y. It should close. Hope this helps. And yes, this will work for any runaway java game, not just spiral knights.
The thing is it happens when the game is windowed too, I cant even move the mouse when this happens. But ill give this a shot.
I think I may have figured out why my game has been crashing recently. I think my CPU is overheating. If I play the game for an hour or so, especially hanging out in the arcade it crashes. While playing the game with Coretemp running my core temp shot from 49C to 60C in a minute or two it got to 72C after spending less then a minute in the Arcade. I guess I need a new CPU fan or something because thats just insane. Any suggestions?

Tried that. No change. It is as if I hadn't even clicked the kill process option.
Seems to be happening more often actually. Over the last few days.
The only thing that will get them to close/stop is restarting/shutting down the computer.
Have you updated your Java version or been through the Technical Help Sticky?
You should be able to still shut down "javaw.exe" in the Task Manager.
