Display Driver Has Stopped Responding

So I recently downloaded Spiral Knights through steam after having not played it since around the time of launch. There were few issues at first, aside from some characteristic low framerate, though after a while the game began crashing at random intervals. The game will freeze for a few moments, the screen will go black and then back to normal, and then Windows displays a help bubble in the lower right saying "Display driver has stopped responding and has recovered successfully." At this time the game window has gone completely white and has to be closed manually and started up again. Initially it would only occur after over an hour but it has become far more frequent in recent days. It should also be noted I never had this issue before picking the game up again, so it's a recent occurrence and not something caused by my pc hardware.

I've tried a few things so far to fix the issue though none have helped. I've updated my display drivers (Radeon 4870 X2 is the card), I've updated java, I've attempted running it with 64-bit java and no steam overlay, and I've tried reinstalling the game. I did a little reading on the issue but nothing definitive was reported, generally just redirects to the tech support sticky. One post seemed to mention there being an issue with the AMD drivers which, if true, really leaves me in a bit of a bind. :<

Anyhow, if anyone could shed some light on the issue I'd be very appreciative. Thanks in advance.

Have you tried toggling

Have you tried toggling Catalyst A.I. to Standard? That will disable any dual GPU settings that could cause hiccups.

I tried setting Catalyst AI

I tried setting Catalyst AI to Standard as well as disabling it and neither got rid of the issue. With both settings I still crashed within 5 minutes of starting up, just idling in the Arcade. I might try playing it in fullscreen or running it outside of steam, but aside from that I'm not sure what else to do.

I have the Radeon HD 5700's

I have the Radeon HD 5700's and I had the same problem for a long time Focant. What you can do, if you haven't, is upgrade your catalyst to 11.1. Its probably at 10.8 right now, which is what mine was. I'm working on finding the link for you..

http://sites.amd.com/us/game/downloads/Pages/downloads.aspx

Where it says "Automatically Detect and Install" click the "Download Now" and run it. It should upgrade your CCC and you shouldn't incur this problem again.

If the problem continues after this or if you have already done this I would suggest just downloading the game installer and installing it. I hate steam due to its poor performance and compatibility with Win7.

The only issue I see now is that when I'm down doing Vanaduke, I lag horribly through every pre-Vanaduke level (Like Depth 24-27). The lag isn't bad at Vanaduke but you won't have the crashes anymore, which is a bargain in my eyes.

Edit: You can also refer to my post on this issue. It may help you if my resolution didn't.

Unfortunately I've already

Unfortunately I've already tried updating my drivers since this issue began. I was running 11.7 or so, I believe, when the problem surfaced and updated to 11.8 in an attempt to fix it. Doing so didn't yield any improvements though. I did catch a few mentions of the Open GL issues and that it's been particularly bad since 11.3 or something like that (perhaps it was 10.3 I can't quite remember), but no one had any answer to the issue other than "sucks."

Anyhow, thanks for taking the time to suggest a solution. I'll have to try running it outside of steam and see if that helps at all. If worse comes to worse I might try installing older drivers back when I didn't have this issue and see if that resolves anything.

I'm running into the same

I'm running into the same problem, I've tried just about everything...

running full screen
running in compat mode
not rendering effects
cat AI standard and disabled
diabling the steam overlay
reinstalling everything
11.7 11.8 and 11.9 drivers

anyone find a solution?

It works... for now

Ok so I downgraded drivers to 11.2 and it seems to work for now. I haven't tried re-enabling cross-fire as I'm a bit sheepish to touch it. I'm not 100% convinced that it is good yet as previously I would get no crashes in a day or two, and then it would crash about every five minutes. The problem areas seemed to be in the grassy levels (ie wolver den, etc) and in the haven / arcade. so far I have about 9 hours of ply without a crash. I do however get pauses for about a second here and there now. Here is my system build in case it helps anyone else out:

ASUS rampage extreme
intel qx9770
corsair dominator 4gb
HIS 4870x2
sound blaster xfi titanium
kingwin lazer 1000 watt
win7 ultimate 64bit

Same problems

I have 2 AMD Radeon 4800's and a CrossFire enabled. The crashes happen to me at anytime during gameplay...sometimes it is 5 minutes, other times it is around 20 minutes in. I am playing around with the catalyst controls as we speak, so I am not sure of what it would accomplish. wish me luck in any case.

Seraphyth, I would advise

Seraphyth, I would advise setting the Catalyst A.I. to standard and try disabling Triple Buffering. I used to run a pair of HD 4870s in Crossfire and I did not have to use any odd fixes back with the 11.2 drivers. I could even leave the cards in linked mode (the game will only utilize one card by default anyway).
