I'm trying to use the mouse to aim. In theory, this will let me fire off the straight lines, and on diagonals.

But when I move, the mouse pointer moves.

What I want: Robo-tron style move with the key, and aim/fire with the mouse. Let me run to the right while shooting to the left.

I can't. Not with keys to move and mouse to aim, anyways.

Yes you can. Use WASD to move. Assign fire to left-click and shield to right-click, if you need to.

Yuck.

I have a left-hand mouse, at least on this PC. (And a single button on the Mac, if I ever get it working. (Still looks like the only reason for requiring an advanced graphic card is the background that doesn't affect the game; I'm hoping that the real (non-training) zone will make use of the graphic requirement.)

Why do WASD do different things than the arrows?

WASD is configured by default

WASD is configured by default to simply move, not aim in that direction - as opposed to the arrow keys. You can change the key configurations in the options menu to your liking, however. Experiment away!

That was simple

That was simple enough.

Arrows move, and letters change facing.

Now I should be able to move with the arrows, and fire with the mouse.
