okay so i can install the game just fine off of steam, but when i try to start it the screen goes black for a few seconds then starts flashing between my desktop and black then i get a message from java telling me to make sure i have the latest java, latest video drivers, and ensure my hardware acceleration is fully enabled. I have the latest java and drivers. im not sure what it means by hardware acceleration though. please help

also i have a linksys, or however its spelled, router i saw that those do cause issues but idk if it would cause these issuses

That router WILL cause you problems later on, but it is probably not the source of your immediate problem.
So you installed the Steam version of the game? When you launched it Java said you needed to update Java, video drivers and hardware acceleration?
How did you update your video drivers? It may not have worked properly.

updates
my laptops is pretty new and when i went to the hp site and it searched for updates to my drivers there were no new ones for mine so as far as i can tell i do have the latest drivers

As for your driver issue, the computer manufacturer (HP) does not always have updated drivers! HP puts the computers together, but does not write the drivers for the hardware. You will have to go to the Intel website and get the drivers there, and manually install them.

You can try following those instructions to get around it. Some OEM laptops won't accept any drivers except ones provided by them... and those usually don't get updated drivers after 2 years or the end of an otherwise short product life cycle.
Also, if you have a laptop with switchable graphics, you need to check the Optimus or PowerXpress utilities to make sure javaw.exe (pointing to the steam install) has a profile for it. Otherwise, it'll just stay on the intel IGP and run like garbage.
It sounds like your graphics card might be too old to play the game.
Are you playing on a Windows computer? If so, what version of Windows?
Can you tell us what your graphics card is? To do this, follow these instructions:
Click on the 'Start' menu and then click on 'Run'.
Type in "dxdiag" and hit 'OK'.
In the second tab ('Display'), the details about your graphics card will be listed. We need to know its name or chip type.
