Is there a way for me to give a bound item to a friend to use his upgraded recipe on it?

This is really confusing and it looks like an obvious feature. Any way for us to do it?
I have a bound hat. But he has the upgraded recipe version of the hat. Is there any way for him to make it for me with my hat even though it's bound?

I think it was designed to prevent anything like this.
