I have to at least concur with the notion of really not enjoying landing on a Candlestick Keep level and I will often try to avoid them where possible. Rather than outright remove them I'd hope for some redesigns of the layouts because having to stay by candlelight because several Grimalkins decided to spawn in ahead of you and block the narrow path (because it's almost always a narrow path) then it stops being fun. I at least like the idea behind them but just not the execution.
i rather like Candlestick Keep but it doesn't have even a mediocre payout, its outright terrible for all the factors (Grimalkins, everywhere dark, you have to backtrack sometimes since buttons spawn monsters on the path you came from, lots of 3-hit blocks preventing from getting through easily and enforcing you to run back and forth to just make yourself a path so a Grimalkin doesn't take your 2/3 hp when it bites) that you have to account in:
D20 Burning Blackout - 321 crowns
D21 Fear The Dark - 445 crowns
D22 Noxious Night - 369 crowns ( a D22 Treasure Vault gave me 591 crowns in comparison)
D24 Noxious Night - 695 crowns
I think everyone who played Candlestick Keep knows what I mean.
A tier 2 party that would otherwise lightly surf on my waves to Emberlight can't survive a depth 9 Candlestick Keep. When I reach the elevator - that is, if i reach it at all - most people quit (because they died to often) or are dead out of reach or I can't revive them because I don't have enough health myself.
There are two tactics to play Candlesuck:
1. Kill everything, but stay in candle shine whenever a Grimalkin is visible. If candle extinguishes retreat to next burning candle. This does not work, because there are too many monsters destroying your shield, because you can't avoid them in that small radius or they force you to stay out of candle shine and die by Grimalkin bites. Also, when it works sometimes it takes ages and is very frustrating, because you run back and forth all the time, lighting candles, retreating, lighting them again ...
2. Rush ... but there are switches, locked doors, etc. that will stop you and then you will often get wiped.
I can play Candlesuck better when I am alone, but I don't like playing alone. This is not funny :(
this problem can be easily solved by one thing: learning how to play the level
I've honestly never had trouble playing a candlestick keep level. Well, except for the first time right after they came out and a gate didn't drop correctly, but they fixed that bug.
Just stick together and move quickly through the level and you'll never even notice the Grimalkins. Also put away your vog crap and get some shadow resist armour.

Candlestick Keep levels are interesting, innovative, refreshing and easy to beat. Most of the time xD
If you die by big bad ghost bites, you're doing it wrong.
As for payouts: its approximately the same with all levels - first few levels (before terminal) pay less than 10 ce per level, next few levels (between terminal and town) pay more than 10 ce per level (up to 30 ce per level), full run from town to town usually makes you more crowns than you spent on riding elevators. If you didn't revive too much.
....? To be honest I find CSK pretty dang easy.
Candlestick keep is just like Ironclaw.
Easy, non profitable, little payout and little heat. If anything, it should be in T3 only, in Stratum 6 at that matter. Every other CSK level is miserable in payout.
...is easily one of the better level sets. its actually challenging (except in Tier 1) which is what most people actually want from games, a challenge
true it doesnt give the greatest payout, a slight buff would be nice considering how risky entering the levels can be but then again - all treasure is random
arena's give more simply due to the fact that there are more monsters/treasure boxes
i've made 6/700 cr from strata 3 treasure vaults, apparently the worst levels in the game for cr (admittedly all boxes gave nothing but cr but thats how random treasure works)
if your having trouble with it then you need to reconsider your equipment and strategies, silvermail with a peacemaker and your set for CSK
the solution is to make it so that Candlestick keep is worth playing.. because as of right now why bother?
Becaues it's fun! It might not be as lucrative in terms of loot or heat, but personally I'm happier having the odd break from the standard hack'n'slash dungeons to play with a different level mechanic. Maybe upping the available loot would put paid to these asinine complaints, in which case fine, do that.

I suppose this is a matter of opinion, but if I were asked to describe these levels, "fun" would never cross my mind. I find them boring and slow as Grimalkins decided they're going to spawn in to block the narrow passageways so you spend far too much time hanging around in candlelight waiting for them to move.
For me this isn't even a matter of difficulty or loot. I just find them dreadfully boring. Of course, going in with teams and having even more Grimalkins blocking passageways and slowing the team down just kinda goes to make things worse.
Not that I'd suggest removing them entirely. Just rework them. Even without complete level redesigns, altering spawn rates or something would help.

It's more that more players means they spawn more Grimalkins, but since you can't attack or even stun them then it only increases the amount of time you hang around candlelight.
