For general use. I intend to use it as a side weapon, along with cutter series weapons.
Should I get a Pulsar or Voltech handgun?

I started the same way. Had a cutter, now a vile striker. Had a voltech, but switched to pulsar because I didn't like the two shot clip. It's been useful but since I've switched from the cutter to the brandish I haven't used it much. I would aim for the Polaris.

The voltech is more useful in PVP than the pulsar, since the pulsar's shots are too slow and easy to dodge. Unless you're spamming a narrow hallway you aren't going to get many hits.
The pulsar is much more useful in PVE since a lot of mobs don't/can't dodge (and given that wolvers and gremlins are resistant to elemental...), and as other have said it has better dps. Just be careful using it when you're in groups.

Pulsars are so annoying. On your side or against. Pro gunners should know better then to use them, besides maybe solo play.
I can 1 shot turrets with my alchemers, can you do that with your pulsar?:)

I understand that alchemers are powerful, I've seen a prismatech 1-hit a mechaknight. I just really hate the clip size. I'm the pew pew pew type of swordy and the pulsar works wonders with a swordy. Moderate clip size with shock and knockback. Maybe I should mention that I prefer solo runs. But with teams I love holding monsters in corners with my gigawatt.

Get the spamcanon aka Pulsar, it stops Gun Puppies/Howlitzers/Polips from shoting so yeah, even more reason to use it as the only gun you are going to ever use. You don't really need skills for it, you just need play with it an hour and you will learn that you just need to shot once left, once right, stop for a few miliseconds, shot left, shot right, repeat till you kill the monster.

Gross, get an alchemer. My storm driver is by far my favourite gun, I rarely don't carry it with me, and it's not an absolute pain to be on the same team as.

For purely solo play, pulsar.
For purely solo play, pulsar. If you're main going to use it against turrets but very sparingly otherwise, pulsar. For anything else, alchemer. Your teammates will hate you if you spam pulsar on everything while in a group. Well, at least the good ones will, as you'll get them killed. The bad ones who would die a ton anyway might not know any better.

Pulsar --> Anti-turret or solo play
Voltech --> More general use.
Pulsar does more damage than a Voltech.
Voltech can ricochet.
A Nova driver is fine too.
