when i saw the 4* and 5* version of trinkets at brinks, it occured to me that the 5* is only marginally better, yet costs 50 tokens more? are the stat bars lying? bc i went and bought the 4* version of peirce trinkets, and idk if that was a mistake lol

This may be why...
Because they both use one trinket slot. You can never possibly wear 4 copies of 4* trinkets which together (theoretically) are better than 2 copies of the 5* trinkets together. The cost probably also factors in effectiveness vs. available space.

The proportional difference
The proportional difference in cost between 3* and 4* is even bigger (20 vs. 50). I agree with FernPanda, this is probably because you have only so many trinket slots, so people will buy the absolute best one (eventually, at least) almost regardless of price.
I'm not aware of any tests to determine exactly how much any of Brinks' trinkets matter, though. If you want to do some, I'm sure many people would be interested in the results.
I believe the general consensus is to "not trust status bars" as they "poorly represent the effectiveness of the item". With that said, I do not know how good the 4* compared to 5* is
