Hey I'm one of many anime fans. Wondering what anime do you guys watch? What's your favourite?

I recently watched the Angel Beats! series, and I loved it. It's probably my favourite at the moment. But other than that I really liked Fullmetal Alchemist and avatar: the last air-bender (looking forward to "the legend of Korra" xD).

So that's me, what about you?

Can't say I don't appreciate the overuse of catgirls and maids.

I really don't go out of my way to watch anime.
I often sit down to watch one, I find it hilarious, then look through things on the internet and realise I was meant to take all of that seriously.
Which is impossible. You have to be mentally defective to take cartoons seriously.

You can keep your servants and cats, I'll take the glasses-girls

You mean Japanese animations and comics, don't you, OP? Because you just said the Japanese word for cartoon and the Japanese word for comic book... Anyway

List of anime I've watched in the past:

Devilman-Lady (or is it DevilLady? I don't know)
Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex
Cowboy Bebop
Outlaw Star
Nah-Roo-Toe (Too annoying now. Let it die)
Death Note (my sister keeps telling my I resemble L)
Digimon (Season 3 was the best)
Higurashi (The one with the shrine maidens and the girl with the cleaver)
Ebichu minds the house
Panty and Stocking With Garterbelt (hope I don't get in trouble for mentioning them even though these are commonplace items of clothing)

Anime I've been trying to watch lately:

Madoka Magica (Seen up to episode 6, I believe. The realms the witches live in are trippy as all get out)

in somewhat related news: Hannah Barbera and various companies making cartoons in the 60s and onwards need to PAY IN BLOOD (alternatively they can accept a death sentence by electric chair whilst wearing clown costume in order to keep the color of their monstrous reptilian blood a secret) for doing their very best to make sure everyone thinks "animated things are for kids and kids alone." with their terrible animation and writing.

Man, that's exactly what I did every day of High School.

terrible animation and writing.

Anime isn't much better.

It's pretty hard for me to relate to drawings of impossible people going through exaggerated circumstances, like killing their ex-girlfriend after having sex with her so she won't talk about it to the girl they dumped her for but don't even like.

I much prefer to be entertained for the right reasons, rather than laugh at how pathetic a show is at triggering an emotional response.

*is currently listening to the theme song of Cowboy Bebop*

Anime isn't much better

yeah, but Western animation (that is, AFTER Disney stopped making those theatrical shorts) pretty much INVENTED those cheap time-saving limited-animation techniques so they could quickly whip up a cartoon to sell cereal or toys to kiddies. The Japanese just used them so they could get the next episode of *really long storyline* done in a week or two. Americans didn't DO that because kids "don't have the attention span for a continuous storyline".

*being able to relate* probably is only tangential with fiction/fantasy anyway- how do I relate to an exaggerated drawing of a chicken or an ubermensch in spandex? Or even colored ponies, actually? Or hell, space cowboys and AI-related cyborg policewomen with identity crises?

On the internet, there's no such as thing as being wrong.

I was going to post something really long here but I really don't want to argue about cartoons. Or human psychology.
Especially not with somebody who doesn't really know what they're talking about.

Quitting an argument isn't the same as losing

But it doesn't mean you win either. I can also say I was gonna post a TL;DR thesis that would blow your points out of the water and that I was going to mail you a copy of the Videodrome tape to mess with you but I quit because you're not worth the trouble.

Of course I lost anyway since I wasn't able to convince you animation can be taken somewhat seriously and isn't just "cartoons". With the way you're overgeneralizing I have as much chance of winning that as I have of breaking down a wall with a peashooter.

And yes, I kinda know what you were meaning to post- it's the personalities, right? They still think and act human in a way you can understand and sympathize with, and somehow become relate-able.

But this doesn't happen when they're supposed to be human in a setting more or less close to reality but their characters are out of whack.

and I suppose you were also going to say that a bunch of animation studios for a number of the western cartoons I pointed out are Japanese.

Especially when it comes to me.

It's nice how people try and predict me by choosing the most obvious choices, when the most obvious choice is almost always the wrong one.

that's nice

It's nice you're pretending you're special and I cannot see through you.

And I'm dumb for following with this argument anyway since you're obviously someone who thinks animation of any kind stinks and is horribly juvenile.

and since we've both established this argument is fruitless we can move on.

I'm liking season 2 of Friendship Is Magic so far. Discord is an amusing villain

Here are some

Here are some recommendations. Of course, categories aren't mutually exclusive- a lot of these would fall in 'Sheer Awesomeness' otherwise. And let's not get started on Miyazaki films, the majority of those are fantastic as well.

Series that will make you stop and think:
Ghost in the Shell: Standalone Complex
Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi

Suspense/mystery
Higurashi
Umineko

For laughs
Lucky Star
Hayate no Gotoku
Axis Powers Hetalia

Sheer awesome
Puella Magi Madoka Magica
Cowboy Bebop
Samurai Champloo

I actually haven't picked up

I actually haven't picked up any anime lately. Manga is a different story--but I've read and enjoyed so many I'm too lazy to list them all.

Listed below are some of the TV anime I can list off the top of my head.

BLUE GENDER
I've actually only seen one episode so far, but I gotta say I'm very very interested in this series.

Code Geass
Saw both seasons. There's actually not much character development, thinking about it, but the drama and the struggles between the characters is strangely compelling. Also, giant robots.

Chevalier (Le Chevalier D'Eon)
Historical fiction fantasy concerning the knight, D'Eon, and the circumstances of his sister's mysterious death. The intrigue, the actual character development, and just the amount of detail put into this is just fantastic. There are times when the 3D models look jarringly out of place though. Also, don't watch the dub. All the male characters sound like jerks.

DARKER THAN BLACK
There's no moon in the sky, and all the stars you see are fakes. In the world of DARKER THAN BLACK exist Contractors, psychopaths with supernatural powers linked to the stars who must pay a price whenever they use their powers. For apparent psychopaths the characters are very compelling.

DEATH NOTE
Do I really have to explain this? Anyway, I actually stopped watching around the 20th episode... But it was still fun.

Dennou Coil (Computer Coil)
Science fiction concerning augmented reality and how technology fosters connections and disconnect between people, especially the youth. It sounds really heavy and boring but is actually a lot of fun to watch.

Digimon
I haven't watched this in a while, but I can tell you Renamon is my idol.

Elfen lied
A mutant species arises in the human race called diclonii, females with two adorable horns on their head that look like cat ears, telekinetic arms called "vectors", and homicidal tendencies which may be in-born, a result of the opprobrium humans generally like to heap on others who are different, or perhaps both. Between the gratuitous violence (which I think is an artistic choice) are the blossoms of romance, and it's the latter, I think, which has made this series so popular. I actually like the anime better than the manga.

HELLSING
Remember kick-ass vampires? Yeaaaaah.

Inu Yasha (InuYasha)
It was a part of my childhood. That's all I can say.

Jigoku Shoujo (Hell Girl)
There's a website you can go to, at midnight, where you can contact the Hell Girl and sentence someone to hell. Of course, after you do this, you have to go to hell as recompense. The first episodes are very formulaic--this person hates this person, this is why this person hates this person, is that hatred really worth forfeiting one's soul, and then the climax where the string is pulled. It sounds horrible but the intrigue and the twists are enough to keep anyone watching, and it does lead to something greater.

Kuro Shitsuji (Black Butler)
British little orphan rich boy makes a Faustian contract with a devil to make him his super butler, and also acts as The Queen's Dog working in the criminal Underworld. I loved the first episode, it was so delightfully dark and macabre! And then things started getting silly. Especially when they introduced that abominable pretty-boy spoiled Indian prince. And then what the heck was with that curry, and...

LOVELESS
Ritsuka Aoyagi is like any other twelve-year-old boy: he's a virgin (you can tell because he has cat ears and a tail), reads the works of Friedrich Nietzsche, suffers from amnesia, and had an older brother who was brutally murdered. After moving to a new school he's accosted by a friend of his older brother's and gets entangled in the world of spell battles, fought by teams of Sacrifices and Fighters. It sounds really confusing but the series, aside from a few "I totally went on a coffee break" scenes, is animated beautifully and masterfully directed. It has a wonderful soundtrack too.

Mousou Dairinin (Paranoia Agent, Hallucinogen)
A series of rash assaults committed by a rollerblading boy with a baseball bat grips Japan. The series, a critique of modern Japan, follows the victims of Shounen Bat (Li'l Slugger) and the detectives on his trail.

Nijuu Mensou no Musume (The Daughter of Twenty Faces)
Based on a manga. Twenty Faces, a world-renowned thief with a mysterious past, adopts a young girl, Chiko, who was being poisoned by her aunt and uncle. She takes up the trade and starts to uncover her new "father's" past and the scars he bears from World War II. The series is incredibly well-written--if it wasn't then Edogawa Rampo's descendants wouldn't have allowed either the show or the manga, now would they?

NOIR
A tale of two assassins inextricably tied together. Kirika, a highschooler, lost her memory, and Mireille, a Frenchwoman, lost her parents as a child. Aware of her identity as an assassin, Mireille vows to kill Kirika, but only after they find out about Kirika's missing past and how she is related to her, and quite possibly her parents' death.

PERSONA -trinity soul-
I really, really liked the beginning of the series. Very dark. After those first few episodes it started being a little bit happy-go-lucky for me, and because of that the best songs form this show (in my opinion) aren't used very often... but still a good watch. It starts getting confusing as hell toward the end though.

Pokémon
CATCH 'EM ALL

Rurouni Kenshin
Also watched this as a kid. I thought Kenshin was cool.

Sailor Moon
Who hasn't watched Sailor Moon?

THE BIG O
Giant robots in noir. The guys who worked on this also worked on the best episodes of Batman: The Animated series. Everything in the show bleeds with style, and it makes many homages to TV shows from Japan and the US, from Iron Man #28 to The Twilight Zone. It loses some of its character (and noir) during season 2, however, and you're better off not watching the end. Seriously.

The Rose of Versailles (Lady Oscar)
Taking place before and during the French Revolution, Oscar's father is the head of the Palace Guards, and her father has raised her to become a successor. Oscar, committed to knighthood, has her convictions tested as France descends into chaos. Though a little stiff now (zooming into concept art is totally animation guys) the show employed the biggest names in the animation industry, and was extremely well-crafted for its time. Because of its age you might have some trouble finding this show. The show itself is based on a classic manga that earned the creator, Riyoko Ikeda, a Legion of Honour from France.

Yamato Nadeshiko Shichi Henge (The Wallflower, Perfect Girl Evolution)
Sunako is a teenaged girl with self-esteem problems. Big self-esteem problems--and has abandoned all notions of femininity whatsoever. Her rich aunt then invites four young men to turn her dark niece into the model of womanhood. I haven't actually seen all the episodes. Most of the episodes are very formulaic, and certain male characters can be grating, so it's not good to watch a marathon. If you're looking for a zany shoujo anime to watch though, this is good.

Yami no Matsuei (Descendants of Darkness)
Guardians of Death are tasked with overseeing the dead, making sure the dead stay dead, that certain people die, et cetera. The series focuses on a pair of these bureaucrats, and the uncovering of their pasts. It gets angsty, but it doesn't take itself too seriously as to be a put-off, and isn't too silly to be a put-off either. You genuinely want to see what happens next to the characters, plus the show itself is well-produced. The soundtrack sounds really outdated now, but it's not grating and matches the show. Also, neoclassical metal version of the The Devil's Trill.

Yuu Yuu Hakusho (YuYu Hakusho)
Old show I have watched.

FLCL

Sayonara, Zetsubou-Sensei

First two are giant robot anime. Evangelion is a lot more serious in nature, while Gurren Lagaan is much more light hearted. But they're both great anime to watch, and I would recommend both.

FLCL and Zesubou are more of a screwball anime series. They're not really serious, but they're always fun to watch when you have nothing else to do. =P Besides, Sayonara, Zesubou-Sensei has the best line ever! =D

I have more, this is what caught my attention for the most part.

This show made South Park looked like it belonged and Nick Jr. 'nuff said.
3. Puella Magi Madoka Magica
Episode 3, Loop holes, F@ckin' QB!
4. Tengen toppa gurren lagan (Heavenly breaker crimson face) [TTGL]

5. Megas XLR

I don't usually watch Anime,

I don't usually watch Anime, but my recent (past) obsessions were Gurren Lagann and Bakemonogatari.

Unreleased stuff I'm obsessed over:
Rebuild 3.0
Carnival Phantasm Vol.2

Uncertain if exists or not but do want:
Spice/Wolf Season 3.

In other news, anyone watch this French Anime-like called Wakfu? It's really REALLY good. <_<
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gonxYfbaVm8

Budget is really high, and the animation keeps improving as newer episodes come out (with the exception of episode 5, i think). Only problem is with plot pacing (a bit slow), and sometimes delays with episodes.
