Take a look at this picture of Cradle:
http://media.spiralknights.com/wiki-images/b/b5/Large_World.jpg
You'll notice that only about half of the world has the Clockworks exposed. Wouldn't it be interesting to explore the rest of the planet, like those mountains and such?

I'm not saying I want a new way to farm crowns without using energy. I just want to be able to hone my skills and keep playing it without using energy, even if it means not getting any of the benefits the Clockworks has, like materials and crowns.

So, wouldn't it be cool to run around that surface area, killing monsters and finding new places with your band of heroes? Maybe you could even find different-looking Havens to hang out at, since the sun-drenched grassy town of the current Haven could get a little boring. Maybe you could discover new equipment exclusive to the Surface. But, hey, what do I know? I just wanna keep playing after my Energy runs out for the day.

In a way I agree. I think

In a way I agree. I think for the effort of exploring though there should be some kind of reward, or something to work toward, besides just exploring to explore. I like the idea of finding new towns by crossing the surface, with possible different items available there instead of from Haven.

Maybe those other towns are subject to monster raids (Haven is Haven because it is... a haven), and players would have to defend against higher end monsters now and then or reclaim the towns from these monsters. As a reward for achieving this maybe players could get some title as "defender of the frontier" or something.

I think you're on to

I think you're on to something-- for all the greatness of the Clockworks they are the only places you can really go for anything! There's clearly a whole planet to explore, but aside from the tutorial area and Haven we've not gone anywhere. It may sound a bit cliche or overdone, but it's just a simple fact that different locales add something adventurous to a game. The Clockworks are already quite adventurous and varied, but perhaps a few static locations on the surface would be good as well. It could, as Giik says, have far less benefits for the sake of cheaper exploration. Perhaps, since there are (as told in the rescue camp) ravines and such around the planet, there could be some big, labyrinthine complex of pathways on the surface that don't change, but are so complicated and expansive the Knights, being landlocked at the moment, would have a lot of work to do in mapping the thing. That could also explain the lack of other settlements-- the Spiral Order simply hasn't discovered them yet. Of course there could be a few reasons to explore, like different settlements yielding different portions of the Clockworks (sort of like individual continents having different flora and fauna in RL) or some such thing, and like Giik suggested some surface-specific items or something. Maybe there could even be some remote entrance to an expanded version of Vanaduke's citadel or the Jelly Palace!
Also, as a Beta member, I recall there originally being an East Side area to Haven that never opened. I'm not sure if you developers have an idea for that place returning or dropped it all together, but I'll bet there could be a travelling terminal in that now-nonexistant area's future. I'm just speculating as to how it could work, but I can't help but agree with the idea. I'd certainly love to have such a place around for added immersion and depth.

I agree with all of this, but

I agree with all of this, but i think it's just a matter of time. the Dev's are most likely busy working on PVP, the core, the east side, and the rest of Cradle...and I imagine there's a pretty sizeable update coming soon.

Buy more energy. You should

Buy more energy. You should be self sufficient, even with t1 runs.

It's not about having

It's not about having insufficient energy (though wanting to stay free and/or save CE for crafting is valid), it's about a whole world outside of Haven that we never get to explore.

Ideas

Well, if they made it cost no energy, then (as you said) there would be little to no rewards (although making it a 'personal achievement' thing would be interesting).

Now, if they wanted to make it cost energy, I imagine we could have a system of trams instead of elevators, since they said that ALL machinery works on energy.

What I think would be interesting is if we had more entry points to the Clockworks in addition to things like normal settlements. The clockworks is shown to be about half the planet across and all the way down to the core, so I imagine we could have some other locations to catch elevators from (they may be abandoned though, seeing as Haven is the only settlement we've actually heard of so far).

Hey! Expanded areas

Hey! Expanded areas throughout Cradle would be cool! That could be where you have the option to do story driven quests! Go deep dark forests, caves, icey mountains, volcanoes....etc?Like every time you accept a quest, you have spend some energy. If you don't manage to complete a quest (because you have to get off the computer or something), that is ok because you can't do it later.

But to make the energy thing balanced, you only could do one quest at a time, if you choose to do a different quest then a message pop up, "Are you sure you want to disband 'so and so' quest to do this quest? You would of wasted that energy from accepting the last quest if you do so."

I dunno Matoro, that seems

I dunno Matoro, that seems awfully typical of any other MMO. Sure, quests could be a good idea, but they would have to be a lot more involved than the typical collect 'n drop sort of thing. I think what you're talking about could work, but if there's gonna be surface level questing it should be directly related to the search for energy to power the Skylark, or some research into the Strangers, or even analyzing Lord Vanaduke's stronghold. Every quest should be long and sprawling, full of developed storyline, is what I mean. Something that's an actual journey-- something that you can't complete in a single day of casual gaming!

Hmm...I wouldn't want it to

Hmm...I wouldn't want it to be a HUGE part of the game. The dungeons should still be the main focus of SK.

Possibly a benefit of exploring and progressing through the wilderness would be recharging your Mist tank really fast? There would also be chances of finding rare items sometimes, but that would present the problem of selling all of the drops for crowns, which would mean infinite energy. And of course, you'd be able to find new Havens that would be themed different, and possibly have items for sale exclusively to a certain Haven.

I like the idea of trains to instantly transport you to another Haven, at the cost of some energy. If you don't want to spend that energy, then you could run through the surface and get to the next Haven.

YES!

I love this idea! I think a one town game gets kinda dull. Exploring is always a good thing to be able to do in any MMO. Tons of MMOs are doing it: WoW, Wizard101, etc. Why not have it in this? One of three rings other games has 2 towns (far as i knew), so why not for this one?

OOH How about, the exit to

OOH
How about, the exit to the wilderness is on the east side
Then you can leave, and explore
And in the wilderness are more spiral knights, but theyve gone insane
They landed in the wrong area, dont know where they are, and lost their sanity
Itd be like mecha knights but harder
Its a little far fetched but I just like that idea
Another thing for the separate cities
We could have specific bosses for each cities' dungeons
Jelly King and Vanduke for Haven
maybe like a Chromalisk and Wolver boss at another place
etc
So if you wanted to fight a different boss, youd have to travel to a new town
