So i made my knight and i wanted it to be swordmaster, because in hack and slash games i like to...hack and slash and feel the impact.

I also wanted him to feel themed without the need to use costumes (because im a F2P and i cant afford to buy more stuff than what i need) and i wanted it to be versatile against pretty much anything, without having to change armor based on what startum i will play (because, again, im a F2Player and dont have the time for more items...yet..)

My question is, is the full cobalt set viable?
I have cobalt helm, cobalt armor, Defender, Calibur, and Flourish.

Hi Kazzol,To answer your

Hi Kazzol,

To answer your question, the full cobalt set is viable for tier 1 and tier 2. It's also viable on certain tier 3 strata, depending on what damage types monsters do.

Although it's perfectly viable, players see it as inferior to the wolver/dusker/ash tail/skolver progression. There's a good reason for this, which is that it blatantly is inferior (those sets have virtually the same stats but have extra freeze resistance and a sword damage bonus). Unless you have a special reason for going with cobalt, you'd be better served by those.

You'll soon notice that equipment stats in spiral knights are not at all balanced - there are certain pieces that are better than other options in virtually every situation. There are also plenty of pieces that nobody in their right mind would make (e.g. chaos cloak/cowl).

If you want a general purpose set that provides some defense against everything, one of the better options is wolver coat (ending up with skolver coat) and magic hood (ending up with divine veil). That setup doesn't provide shadow defense until it's 5*, but that's not so much of a problem before tier 3.

It is possible to do anything

It is possible to do anything in this game with nothing but Kozma gear. I personally love the Levi & Valiance. I even love the look of the Azure Guardian armor. Thing is though, if you want to specialize in swords you would be way better off with the Wolver line. It is Normal/Piercing Freeze with a Sword Damage Bonus. When you go 5* you can either stay on with what I just mentioned or switch to Normal/Elemental Fire with Sword Attack Speed Increase.

If you are only at 2* or 3* it is not too late to switch sets. Either unequip your Cobalt set and sell it back to the vender (can do even if bound) or keep it as Costume if you like the look. Wolver will not cost you any more money, it will just take more trips to Basil to get (remember you can get 2* recipes from Vatel in the Bazzar too).

If you want a piercing shield, don't bother upgrading that Defender. Go grind out the Snarbolax around 4 times and get a Bristling Buckler it is like the defender, but with a sword damage bonus (Low for 2-4* then Med for 5*). You can keep the Flourish & upgrade it to the Final Flourish or you can also grind out a Snarble Barb, which is the same sword but with a different charge attack (crowd control vs single enemy).

*edit* Well ideally you are going to eventually want 3 full sets of armor/helm/shield. One to over each of the special damage types Piercing, Elemental, and Shadow.

Seriously not to late to

Seriously not to late to ditch the cobalt for wolver. You don't even need any heat to take a 2* item to 3*. So, really any heat put on a 2* item is just wasted anyway. Wolver line would save you money too because 1 set of 2*, 3*, 4* recipes is used with the split at 5*. Foquizzle's idea of Skolver + Divine Vail is an idea that I have been kicking around myself and would be a cheap (relatively) way for you get broad protection. DV is Elemental/Shadow + Fire/ShockCurse and Undead DMG Bonus Med added to the Skolver's Normal/Piercing Freeze Sword DMG Med.

Short Answer: Yes

Almost any combination of equipment is viable, but that doesn't make it optimal. The most skilled player can do good things with the worst equipment.

If you want to be a Swordsman, I personally would recommend the Wolver line of Armor. It is virtually identical to the Cobalt line but gives an additional bonus to Sword Damage (or Speed if you opt for Vog Cub over Skolver) and also has resistances to freeze. There is almost no reason, save laziness, why you would opt for Cobalt over Wolver especially if you are planning to be a Swordsman.

My recommendation to you is to go for this 2* set:
Wolver Cap --> +Damage for Swords
Wolver Coat --> +Damage for Swords
Bristling Buckler --> +Damage for Swords
Calibur --> Great all purpose Sword

Yes, this set is very popular and used by a lot of the player base, but it is popular for a reason.

As a F2P player myself, I had to look for a set that would be the most optimal yet get me through the most stuff. I took the above set with an Owlite Shield and levelled it to 4-5 stars.

Cobalt set

Cobalt is is a more balanced set and is one of the more prefered set over the others because well.It seems perfect for anything.It adds alot more health than most sets and combined with 2 true love pendants.You have an huge amout of health.which helps you to suvive in tier 3.Plus the weapons.The gun is a powerful gun which allows movement.The sword is a medium speed and high damage weapon.Turn them all to the 5* azure set.And you'll seem over powered.I hope this helps out!

P.S I don't have the set but I am getting there.

Well...

Well after inspecting a little bit i found the cobalt have a little bit more normal and piercing protection at the expense of sword damage and freeze resistance...

@Toastyspiralknight: No,

@Toastyspiralknight: No, Cobalt is not preferred. If you play the game much at all, you will see way more Wolvers than Cobalts.

@ Kazzol

Do not rely on the bars. The bars lie.
Also, were there any heat differences between the two armors. This is incredibly vital in determining whether or not it has more or less defense.

@horizonknight

I look at the more greyish bars that indicate where is the armor going to be when fully leveled.
