I love the look & effects of the Wild Hunting Blade & I think it'd be really fun to fight with, but on my escapades through the various guides & threads I've been hearing some bad things about the Cutter line. Because of that I decided to ask the vets & WHB users: is it really worth it?
Is the Wild Hunting Blade Worth it?
It's awfully true that the Cutter line is not really that much compared to other swords that have a better time on tier 3. The dread venom striker, as well, is often preferred over the WHB. This is pretty much what you see in most threads, but the Wild Hunting Blade isn't a completely useless trophy weapon. Like in the link thread, it's all a matter of preference.
Plus: sometimes instead of bark the ghost wolver will whine when you swing, that's totally worth it.
Looks like I'm gonna end up crafting both XD Anyways, so @Deruku do you not use it in an actual battle situation or do you?
I've used the blade on actual battles, even on bosses (Except Vanaduke). The blade is great on tier 1 and 2 and it holds up pretty well as being stronger than the vile striker and with a broader charge. On tier 3 it's berserk nature could end up intimidating you a bit, since the usual thing is to be careful not to get hit, but I've mananaged to beat a whole tier 3 with it.
I currently use it with 2 sword speed trinkets, as the last hit of the blade is key if you wanna keep foes at bay to do the flinch. While the vog cub can do the same thing, I went with skolver to stack the damage beast bonus, combine it with other UVs (even if the UV is "low" it'll reach maximum if you have skolver set plus barbarous thorn shield) and the best you can get is 4 max damages against 4 types of monsters (if you're lucky to get such a thing XD).
Ok, so this is what I'm getting from this (ty btw ;D)
- Go with the Skolver set if you wanna be awesome & hit maximum UVs
(Q: is that damage? that's the one acronym I can't figure out XD)
(Q: Ok, can you explain more about what you want to pair with the skolver set?)
- Open up two trinket slots
(Q: which two do you use?)
- Get the barbarous thorn shield
(Q: Same effect as Owlite with more sword boost?)
Extra: This seems like a good set up for a Swordsmaster, although I'd leaning a lot towards a soloist, using both guns and swords, so my question is is how much would you lose if you chose to boost up the gun side a little? And if it is worth it, what gear would one use?
Sorry, for so many questions! I'm a noob at this :P
1. UVs, or unique variants which increase damage against a certain monster will stack with the skolver set and the barbarous thorn shield's bonuses, so even if you get a low UV, it'll become very high, ultra or maximum UV.
2. Depends on what you're talking about it's completely possible. The blade will mostly benefit from either more speed, or more damage bonus on it. I personally suggested Skolver as it affects the unique variants of damage bonus directly, but you can perfectly use anything else on it, like for example, vog cub with sword damage bonus trinkets.
Look for what you feel is more comfortable, specially since many people prefer the vog cub or magic sets due to its elemental defense.
3. I use 2 Elite Quick Strike Modules (sword speed increase) since I got the skolver set. However, again, you can get the same bonus if you use 2 Elite Slash Modules (sword damage bonus) without the need of getting the skolver set.
4. I merely suggested the shield because it provides bonus damage with swords. However if elemental defense is on your priority list, pick the owlite and go for the slash modules.
This looks like a really great set up so I gotta ask: How did it serve you in T3, as I understand that it's all fiery down there- so elemental damage mostly... Did you craft the Vog Cub to deal with that? Is having both set ups (skolver/speed & vog/damage) a viable option, taking into account the time, cost, & energy?
I call it WHB to make things easier (typing on a 3DS and all. :/)
The way I use the WHB is different than many people say. First off, I love the look of it and its fun to show off. that is the reason i got it as my 3rd 5* sword.
UVs on it (UV meansUnique Variant)
Charge Time Reduction: Medium
Damage vs. Construct: High (could be VH i forgot :P)
With this on it, the WHB has a total higher DPS than my Levviathan. Both level10. and i wear Full Skolver with a Crest of Almire shield.
How i use it:
My Damage per second (DPS) Trumps my Leviathan if i get in 4 normal hits with the ghost wolver. Its already faster so even with a 2 swing then cancel, then repeat,I get higher dps on most enemies.
Wolvers: for them i just plain swing like crazy, even in T3. usually i hit them and if they teleport...well... they will either glitch and atrack in the wrong direction, even alphas, or ill hit them too.
Chromalisks: can kill with Proto Sword in t3. Too easy. WHB is overkill
Gun puppies and Lumbers: 2 slash, shield, spam the WHB until dead while dancing around them. On the Gun puppies, you can use the charge for a near 1-shot kill. (charge, shield cancel, slash like crazy.)
Zombies: 2 slash, shield, 2 slash shield, run back to shoot them a bit, repeat. The reason you run back is because it is likely that they will hit you if you try to repeatedly 2 slash-cancel them.
Retrodes: same as Zombies
Spookats: Wait for them to charge, then rush in slashing, shield as they charge, repeat. Nothing hard here.
Jellies: 2 slash-cancel, repeat and shield bump if needed.
Tons of jelly: slash your way out
Ive taken my WHB to Vanaduke and won before. My equips?
Skolver full
Blackened Crest or Dark Thorn shield (done with both)
WHB
Leviathan
Gigawatt pulsar
The WHB is good for any boss.
Snarbolax: He is a beast so great DPS within the short time frame hes stunned.
Roarmulus Twins: Takes advantage of DPS in the short time span yet again, but slightly less effective (RT is Construct)
Jelly King: Slash him to death. Charge attacking is fun too but less efficient (cant shield)
Vanaduke: DPS is great during stage 1, 2, and 4. Arguably better than a CIV or Leviathan.
All of that is assuming everything has no added bonus (UV or armor boosts etc.).
Thus you can safely say, if used well, the Cutter series is quite worthwile.
However in most cases Dread Venom beats it because poison is overall better than a Beast bonus. I used to say this:
WHB for show, Venom striker for pro.
That is a lie. Its preference based.
Now think. Would you want a chance of poison on every hit, or look epic while attacking.
I chose WHB and it is partnered with my Leviathan, FoV, and BTB.
I will never part with it, nor get a DVS (Dread Venom Striker).
~Xylka
PS: The UVs on my WHB were upon crafting it. I was so happy! ^^
Forgot to add in...
Gremlins: Slash away. Shield if they attack. Works great against many of them
Silkwings and Mender: Slash non-stop if alone from a group. 100% they will die.
Greavers (the bats): I HATE these so much. if they charge to atrack you spam that WHB. It will interrupt their attack and leave them open to swatting away.
Devilites: No real strategy- OFFICE SUPPLY INCOMING!!
Shield and get close to them, after their attack, counter them with a 3-5slash. usually works.
Trojans: Wait for them to start the attack animation, run behind them dodging the attack, spam attack OR charge attack will hit them ~4 slashes.
Thats all i can think of at the moment. feel free to add on if i missed an enemy.
Wow! Sounds like you really love your blade! Thank You so much for the detail you put into your reply- looks like I'll have to keep this page open when fighting, just to be pro while doing it XD Anywho,
1) what would you think of having as a secondary sword (understanding that you use the Leviathan Blade) & why (so why do you like the leviathan blade so much?)
2) why did you go with skolver instead of Vog? I've heard that t3 is elemental-y & more specifically, very fiery, so why did skolver win out?
I didn't craft a vog cub at all as I went full skolver, nevertheless though, vog cub obviously has potential. Crafting half and half vog cub and skolver, be it helm or armor is a viable option in terms of being cheaper and all, although in my opinion it just looks weird. Both vog cub/damage and skolver/speed are pretty much the same. For tier 3, specially FSC, vog cub/damage is the more friendly choice.
Yeah, I can probably see crafting skolver first & then saving, just in case I was just failing without the extra fire resist, and making vog if need be. I can see though how vog would really have its uses against things like gun puppy hoards, with all that elemental resist. Never the less I think I have time before 5* gear to decide ;)
When using a weapon like the WHB, any damage bonuses are applied to the inherit bonus on the weapon. So if you equip a Barb Thorn Shield you'll get these bonuses:
Wild Hunting Blade
Damage Bonus: Medium (applied to non-beast)
Damage Bonus vs Beasts: Ultra
Equipping full Skolver and Barb Thorn Shield you'd end up with:
Wild Hunting Blade
Damage Bonus: Maximum (applied to non-beast)
Damage Bonus vs Beasts: Maximum
... thus your damage everything, beast or not, will be exactly the same. This is because even though the beast bonus is at level 9 (max + high) the beast bonus caps out at max (level 6.)
Since DVS and WHB have the same base damage, in this scenario the DVS is a better choice since it'll do the exact same damage in the end but also has a chance of poison.
That may be really true, but honestly- do you want a chance of poison or to look really cool while fighting? tehe- a very tough choice imo which is making this hard XD Anyway, why is this "chance of poison" so important later on?
Read what poison does. They do less damage to you and you do more to them and it stops annoying healers.
Of course it's not! Dread Venom Striker is a lot more more useful in many situations!
... but Wild Hunting Blade is really sexy. This is the exact reason I have Divine gear looooooooooooooooool~
Trying: Hmmm, the less damage might be nice- which is why I was thinking of crafting both but... at the same time, it doesn't seem to be a necessity! Crafting both all the way to 5*s might be a little costly besides sooo if I can do without the poison then the WHB is so much cooler.
Archeops: hahahahaha uh huh XP
Im Baaaack!
To answer...
I use my Leviathan because sometimes i still need that good damage output, but am in a tight situation where an accidental half second could mean a team ragequit. no one likes that. (kinda funny though XD)
Also I chose Skolver because...uhh...I thought it looked WAY cooler than cliche Vog (at the time i saw few Skolver. Obviously different now)
Plus I have quite some skill in this game, enough to now solo FSC in Skolver. To me, if i ever need a resist, trikets and UV :)
Now I have Fang of Vog and a Soaking Wetstone Trinket 5*
FoV somewhat replaced my Leviathan, and now that I have the trinket, that 8 seconds of fire became 6 and i resist half a bar of health more :)
Yes I LOVE my WHB. in fact...I just noticed its in every loadout i have!
Its a really nice sword. You get to look cool with it, dance around with wolvers attacking for you, and its much more stylish than that rotten looking, poisonous Dread Venom (No offence Myrtle if you see this!)
Wild hunting blade is always better than Dread venom striker in my opinion. Poison is helpful, but not really the best in ALL situations. Dmg vs Beast applies to beasts universally so status resist isnt an issue. Also its great against T3 Wolvers.
50% of my gear I use was chosen for its looks. my weapons not chosen were Polaris (it is cool though :))
Blitz Needle and Crest of Almire
Even those were partially for looks (Cept Blitz which was solely for FSC use and ended up as my main)
Get WHB first. Then craft other necessities. Then when you're rich get Dread Venom.
Im sure you'll favor the Wolvers though ;)
Goodnight and ill see ya later. You can friend me in game and i can demonstrate how i use my Wild Hunting Blade. send me a request with a messege like: Teach me WHB master! or something and ill reply.
Cya in Haven!
~Xylka
PS FoV is slow as molasses but is quite paired nicely with WHB, like the Leviathan...
Also swap the Leviathan for a Barbarous Thorn Blade and instantly you have 2 dmg types covered. Now buy a Firo/Shock Alchemer and you're set!
Ok goodnight for real this time!
Thank You thank you! Wait, what's you're IGN? Just Xylka?
I'm making the hunting blade right now, simply because I think the WHB looks boss. But I'm a wee bit confused about how to make best use of it with trinkets and armor. The set I thought of was the Divine Veil with the Skolver Coat, since that would give me elemental, shadow, normal and piercing resistance, as well as resistance to four statuses. I'd also be using the Barborous Thorn Shield to get a bit more damage output. As for trinkets, I'm open to suggestions. Does this seem like a good way to use the WHB to the best of it's ability?
(I also have a UV that gives damage bonus vs gremlin high, if that makes a difference)
(Also, sorry for the necrobump, but there seems to be alot of good advice floating around in this thread, and I wanted to see if anyone would be willing to help me out.)
ASI trinkets would be a bit redundant (i think, unless you are Flash), CTR too, since charge is bad. Then we have damage trinkets, wich will make the gremlin and beast UVs (and divine veil fiend bonus) useless because damage gets maxed, making DVS a better sword.
The weapon looks good, but enemies won't die by just looking at it.
Well I've sort of already bought the recipe and learned it ^^'
So I AM going to be using it, I just want to know what you think would be the best way to improve upon it/use it properly.
Also, this is probably wrong, but since the wolver heads also do damage as well as the sword slash itself, doesn't mean that it does more damage then the DVS?
The wolver heads are replacements for the shadow slash so it still does the same damage
i think i remember this beeing said... but let's say it again.
the WHB is useless when you have the right equipment (skolver set + BTS) so when you encounter a beast stratum you'll be wearing skolver+BTS making the damage bonus vs beast useless (and i don't recomend to put on a divine veil in a wolver den eighter) only armor you could use with it is the jelly armor (no damage bonus)
@Kickthebucket Deadly Virulisk matches with the WHB ok, since it has pierce resist and damage vs slime. In fact, Deadly Virulisk plus BTS plus WHB will give you max damage vs slime and ultra vs beast. Not a bad option if for some reason you really don't like the Acheron/GF and Final Flourish/BTB.
It's a bit of an uncommon and somewhat specialized loadout, but would be quite effective none the less.
Chaos Cloak(elem low, fire low, elec med) + Mercurial Helm + swiftstrike buckler
Wild Hunting Blade (UV beast med)
2-3 of the following-
callahan (UV beast low)
Snarbolax bomb
Blitz needle (CTR low)
normal sword/gun for taking care of random enemys that aren't beasts.
And that is what I use for beasts stratums, usually.
does anybody notice that this sword can give you fire effect? if so, join me!
Hcrud, I don't think that was relevant to the topic at all.
To tell you the truth, no. If your going with the cutter series, you should get a dread venom striker.
Look at this thread for more details.
