I have a couple of shield with status resist, but I also see that non of the in game block effects really benefit resisting a status type. They don't all do damage do they? So what is the point? So I hold my Iron Might plate up, which resist stun, and get hit by a lumber. What is the difference if that lumbers ability to stun is taken away? I don't think there is any! My SUGGESTION is that why afflicted with a status, if you hold up your shield, it will speed up the countdown until you are relieved of that status.
Shields with status resist.
Resistances on shields equates to a small damage reduction bonus if it blocks an attack that includes that status type. The damage reduction is nowhere near as powerful as the defense stats, but can mean the difference between 1 or 2 extra hits before it fails.

The shield won't reduce fire damage, thats been tested repeatedly. It does block shock damage though.
Some enemies can inflict statuses through a shield bubble, but typically won't deal damage when this happens. This has to do with how the monster attacks works, and has nothing to do with the Shield's stats. Grievers in particular can be dangerous since their attacks create a small dust cloud that inflicts the status, but is able to ignore shields completely. On rare occasions, Lumbers can stun through a shield without destroying it... still not sure why.
I did not know that fire resist shields reduced fire dame, good to know! And as for shock, You can cancel the damage if you hold your shield up, but you will still take the stutter effect.
Basically, blocking a status effect damages your shield a large amount unless you have the proper resistance. Having the proper status resist is hugely beneficial. That is why heavy hitters like lumbers, trojan, and duke tear your shield apart even if the actual hit damage isn't proportional to how quickly your shield breaks - because your shield tries to absorb the stun and fails.
it sorta alreadly does that...not by speeding up countdown but if ur flamed or something, the sheild with the status resist (it has to have the resist) will take the damage for you. Also if u want sheild status resist, get the grey owlite sheild, it has lots of good status resists and elemental defence.
Also for things like stun...well idk, but ive always disregarded stun in PvE cuz it last for like 3 secs and all you have to do is try to run away from a close mob or slowy try to push em back with a sword. Yeah im not sure how it helps stun or poison (cuz they dont inflict damage) but it helps with the damage on fire, shock, and freeze (when u automaticly unfreeze u take damage).
