Why the Accessories Update isn't a disaster

So. People seem upset about this. I posit that they're upset wrongly, and that this update is actually pretty fantastic.

Below, I'll be presenting some of what I see as the grievances being raised, and why they're inaccurate.

1: Accessories have no stat-related function!
Of course they are, and don't. They're an exercise in conspicuous consumption. By having accessories, you show that you're the kind of person with the wherewithal to have accessories.

2: Accessories are expensive!
Again, conspicuous consumption. Just like the Rose Regalia gear, the point of having accessories is in having them. Their being expensive (by virtue of keys currently costing 750 energy) only makes them an elite status symbol.

2.5: Accessories are too expensive, nobody will buy them
Included because it's related heavily to point two. First-gen Rose Regalia gear can go for 10kCE a set - how is 750 energy anywhere near as prohibitive? Sure, the market will be smaller than it might have otherwise been, but there will be a market.

3: The devs should've been working on [personal pet project], not this crap! Where's my endgame?
Y'know, there are two separate people employed to do art for Spiral Knights (Cherub and Boswick). They don't do level design / equipment design / whatever to begin with. Also, there's other content to this update - have you checked out the prize wheel after each level yet? Finally, there are always future updates. Maybe [issue] will show up in one of them!

4: Removing an accessory destroys the item.
This one, I'm not entirely sure about. I think that when it comes to gear with accessories on it, the accessory is definitely part of that gear - but should the removal necessarily mean destruction of the accessory? I get why it might have to from a design perspective, I think, but this one still rankles me.

How dare OOO generate frivolous content. ;)

I'm with you, Brother. I'm grateful for the update and pleased that they made it hard. This is Spiral Knights.

Welcome to hard-mode, even when it comes to adding the cuteness.

"4: Removing an accessory destroys the item."

If the accessorized/pimped out item can be resold on the market without the accessories being destroyed, I think that would at least allow the seller to recoup some of what they spent, or make a profit. I don't know if this is the case though. Maybe someone will test it out.

At least

Number 4 can be averted if a preview is made to see how your stuff will look like first. It'll give you the chance to look and then decide from there what to do with said accessory. Yes 750 is a huge letdown, not to mention the fact accessories are 1 time use, but oh well, gotta make the best of this.

Both of you are on the ball - there is a preview function, apparently, and items can be resold with accessories on, or so I'd assume - here, check out this image, provided by the wonderful Advancedcookies , who was kind enough to let me take a few screenshots for the wiki.

I agree

It's not like optional, aesthetic items are going to cause any problems. I like the fact that OOO is giving us updates.

Correct me if I'm wrong. I do know there's a preview feature, but it only works on shops, not even in the AH (IIRC). It would be better if there's a unique preview feature for accessories so you can check the accessory first on, let's say, each of your hats or armors first so you can decide where to put it or if not sell it. The accessory is just a 1 shot, and for people who like to toggle their stuff around as costumes, it would just make things "safer" so to speak.

I agree, they should be expensive to make it actually mean something to have one. If I had to spend a few hours/days grinding to get one it'll be a lot cooler than if I could just get one for a couple crowns or in a random drop.

One issue though, anybody know what happens to accessories when you upgrade the armor/helm it's on? For example if I had something on my ash tail coat would it still be there when I upgrade to skolver?

This update is horrible and if you don't believe it you're trolling.

Might as well call the game Spiral Trolls now.

Makes you a troll too.

I am going to check it out

I am going to check it out right now and give my verdict

SOme of the points don't sound so nice but i'm pumped hehe

Edit:

Lol so getting accesories isn't an easy task. This is awesome though and will have a huge effect on the market CE prices (going down probably) but also for people that have been done for a while incentive to play again.

Also people may think the accesories aren't worth it but I am SURE, alot of people WILL be attracted to buy CE simply to get an accesory from the AH shop. Even I am considering it now -_-.

Man I can't wait for my first accesory

No need to complain imo :) You have the same game with optional stuff added hopefully resulting in pros like CE prices going down.

Oh, it does affect me. And soon, it'll affect everyone.

The accessory crap is annoying and can be dealt with. But now I can't play the game due to crashes. The market is gonna get messed up, which affects EVERYONE. Not to mention that there's going to be a lot more clipping with accessories, and the fact that we can't preview accessories and remove them without breaking them. Nor can we afford to waste so much CE on a random accessory when we're better off crafting a weapon. And let's not forget that not everyone likes what Three Rings does to the game. So we're bound to get some positive and negative feedback every time.

Honestly, you only care about blowing thousands of dollars on this game just because of pixels and you're too blind with casual, autistic hipster elitism to realize the true flaws of this update. By your logic, if something sucks you should just ignore it. Well YOU suck, your logic is flawed and your argument is 100% invalid.

I'm not even trolling here. I'm just having a heated debate. And if you think that's trolling, then you have no idea what trolling is. I couldn't care less if you smashed your keyboard in half and went on a rampage murdering people. Whatever mood you're in is fine as long as you can comprehend logic.

Are you sure you're in a

Are you sure you're in a "debate" at all?

This update is horrible and if you don't believe it you're trolling.

What's the point in saying anything contrary to you then if everything that is said is trolling? You believe the update is horrible and therefore anything contrary to this is trolling. That isn't a debate. I do believe you're right to be upset if your game is crashing or otherwise unplayable. But to call everyone else a troll makes you a troll by definition of purposely trying to enrage others through any means, and if you attack anyone's stance as just trolling, you know there is only one response. Are you purposely trying to be sensationalist?

Sucks for folks who can't play due to the recent update, but don't use it as a blanket statement to say everything about the update is bad. If you really wish to debate anything with people who comprehend logic, stick to the actual topic and quit labeling everyone as trolls. You are further trying to enrage people by calling their arguments invalid, which is a terrible statement in general and doesn't mean anything on the internet. An argument is only invalid if you can point to the logical fallacy associated with it.

You can't state that the market is going to get screwed up and make it fact. People also said CE would go way up (having more CE sinks tend to do so). But so far, it's been going down. How is the market going to get screwed up, and can you really be upset over speculation?

You don't appear to be in the market for accessories anyway, so are unaffected by whether or not you can preview them, right? However, for everyone else actually interested, you CAN preview accessories in the bazaar.

I haven't seen terrible clipping so far. While there is purposeful clipping, I mean I haven't seen anything that looked bad, like things just jutting through gear.

The accessory crap is annoying and can be dealt with. But now I can't play the game due to crashes.
Basically it comes down to the game not working for you, since you say you can deal with the accessories. Aside from OOO being unable to test for every computer set up out there, it would be useful to OOO for you to send them a bug report, with your specs and what you were doing when you crashed.

Your posts conflict with themselves. You state that accessories are horrible, and when presented with the opinion that the update isn't bad, you retort with the fact that the game doesn't run well for you. These things don't follow. You've done this in a couple other threads, and I'm tired of seeing you use fallacies in your arguments and then call everyone else trolls. Do you really want to debate anything or just use insults to vent your frustration with your poor performance? In case you think you're special, you're not. Every update results in the bugs section being full of "the game won't load for me anymore!" threads. Does every update break for you? It doesn't, I'm sure. But it always does for someone. Do you think then that every update is bad? This time it affected you, and so this time, it's personal.

Side note: I have a joke with my usual clockworks buddy, that every time there's a major update, there's also an in-game mail that says "Please don't play ____!!" because OOO inevitably broke something and instead of just disallowing it, they ask people not to play it. We've never really seen other MMOs do this. They usually just disable the part that's broken. OOO is the first to consistently ask players not to play parts of the game with each update. You can't catch every bug, but it's just funny that OOO always has to send out mail asking people not to play.

Well...

This system hurt me, I can't play. I've lost energy to crashing it hurt my ability to enjoy the game.

Implying that accessories caused the crash. The update did. When I said "system", I was talking about the accessories because I thought it was a thread about accessories. And it kinda still is.

I'm not even trolling here. I'm just having a heated debate. And if you think that's trolling, then you have no idea what trolling is.

Trolling is posting or making a statement, usually negative, for the purposes of eliciting a reaction (again, usually negative) from others. Yes, you got me. You got a reply.

And I agree with Gell: you weren't in a debate or even in any discussion. You are making a statement, and then including a blanket statement that disagreeing with you is trolling.

@post #11: Spiral trolls

@post #11:
Spiral trolls would be an awful name. They would have to change the art to make all the Knights look like trolls.

Your idea is 100% awful.

On topic:
Yay expensive accessories.

Now if only they provided a preview function in AH. Or just a list of the accessories and what the colours mean for each thing (regal, heavy etc.)

Also, does anyone know what the would match a cyclops helm/ash tail coat costume well?

The complaining will calm

The complaining will calm down eventually. Seriously every update it is the same thing, 500 people cry for a week about it. The majority of people who actually agree with OOO don't post, you just hear the really vocal minority complain every time.
