So, with Sega on board I'm a little curious about whether there will be any "magic" added to the game similar to PSO (only I suppose as a weapon variant). Guns, swords, and bombs are cool, but the air is charged with energy in this game world. Couldn't we have equipment which harnesses this energy to produce "magical" effects? For one, I like being a support character. Fire support is fun (and I'm loving the autogun for it) but I'd like to heal or buff attack/defense.

I'd also like some AoE effect spells like a fireball, firewall, or fire storm. A personal favourite is chain lightning. I think charging being required for spells would make sense, like bombs.

Yeah but you can't toss

Yeah but you can't toss bombs. Also, a cloud of electricity isn't as impressive as raw arcing power jumping between enemies. >)

Maybe later on.

Maybe later on. Right now, the Devs are (or at least should be) focusing on getting the game playable by everyone and making sure there is enough content for players to sink their time into.

Agreed. I'd like the surface

Agreed. I'd like the surface thread mentioned elsewhere on the first page here to be explored. I rather like the idea of fending off a horde of monsters to hold a town. Holding off a horde of monsters with a wall of flames though... Hard to beat that. >)

You sound like a player who

You sound like a player who wants a magic based game
An overpowered magic game at that
They will add more weapons, but I doubt they'll add "uber pwning burn zap spells"
The spiral knights use equipment, all equipment runs off of heat
The most magic like equip in game in my opinion is the wrench wand because you can zap a bolt
Or the sealed sword line because of their charges as well
Magic can ruin a game, and Spiral Knights is fun without it

No, I sound like a player who

No, I sound like a player who wants greater variety. In what way is the Force's tech system in Phantasy Star Online overpowered? It's perhaps the weakest magic system I've come across. Only at the highest levels do the spells begin to compare favourably with the weakest weapon classes. It's also the only primary attack method in the series which has limited ammo. Thankfully Phantasy Star Portable started offering regeneration and equipment based TP stores.

What I'm asking for is variety in attacks. We have ranged attacks aplenty, and we have AoE attacks with huge effects which apply status effects. My only fault is the execution of them, and I wanted something a bit more steam-techno-magicky.

Pickups, guns and bombs vs spells

Actually I think that guns, bombs and pickups provide most effects that spells provide in other MMO.

With guns knight is not only able to deal damage from a distance but also can set foes on fire, freeze them and such.

Bombs work like AoE spells but if you really need something that can be toss go for vials - they work pretty much like AoE spells too and can be tossed.

Mecha Knight Kit works like summoning spell.

If you want to play healer role buy max number (6) of health capsules from Hector, the capsule merchant, before expedition and then revive fallen comrades on the way or drop one of your capsules so a heavily injured friend could pick it up.

I think there are so many possibilities so far that magic is not needed.

Of course, there could be new pickups introduced - like Medbot Kit (create very vulnerable healing scuttlebot, who follows knights - definitely a T3 pickup) or Witch Doctor Bag (create zombie who follows knights and attack their foes, and perhaps revives when killed nearby a grim totem).

There could also be new possibilities of status usage. So far cunning and knowledgeable knight can adjust some monsters' qualities by applying certain status on them - like melting Ice Cubes with fire status and such. Maybe some status based interaction with environment could be introduced in future.

I think the vials and pots

I think the vials and pots (like the fire pots you find every so often) are a first venture into this actually. You're right that guns and bombs are capable of many of these effects I want, but in part it's all about presentation. Again, looking at PSO, guns will achieve a lot of these effects (freezing, burning, etc.) but there are still spells for the varied play style.
