Vendors off dirt cheap prices on mats. 25 crowns for my 2/3 star mats? Really? I have so many mats that don't sell well (Scrap metals, bronze bolts, forbidden fruits) but I don't want to sell them to the vendors for that low.

Keep them until you need

Keep them until you need them, or keep them until someone else needs them, then.

The reason for such low

The reason for such low prices is that mats are so numerous, pricing them any higher would give people too many crowns to work with compared to the coin drop rates.

Seems to me the reason that prices are so low is to encourage players to trade rather than merching everything. If you get the same amount of money selling 100 shards to a merchant as you do trading 1 to a player, which option will a player choose? Selling to players can be a bother, though...

I think a small increase in

I think a small increase in mat sell prices wouldn't be too hard on the CE market.

Let's say 0* items are 2 or 3 cr each, you could sell 100 of your most worthless mats to get 200 to 300 crowns. That's not enough for you to buy CE, but it would be enough if you're at a Terminal, and you need just 300 more crowns to buy that recipe you really, really wanted...
