So can anyone suggest some good alternate sound tracks that goes well with Clockwork dives? I'm talking video game, movie, and more off-path music... too much alternarock, hip hop, and inappropriate use of metal in youtube vids killed off my tolerance for those genres.

So far I've been having great success with Binding of Issac, and Dead Island, and wanna expand further.

Other game ost's

I'm a huge fan of using music from other games. I like the MGS1 Alert theme for danger rooms and the MGS1Mantis' Hymn for FSC. The Monster Hunter 1 Desert fight theme fits for pretty much anywhere there's fighting.

I'm on my phone, so no YT links yet. I'll add them later.

Also, here are the obligatory Pokemon RBY battle theme and Guile Theme mentions.

In my opinion, the Bastion

In my opinion, the Bastion OST fits perfectly with Spiral Knights. I just need to figure out how to make looping .ogg files, then I will replace my in-game music with the Bastion soundtrack.

Here are some examples

"I like the MGS1 Alert theme for danger rooms"

I read that as Metal Gear Alert Theme - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABuvCFLBnow

Best with gun puppy danger room.

I wish the boss fights were intense enough for music though. Sadly, they need some work. I really wouldn't mind having an excuse to listen to - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B_MW65XxS7s

I still enjoy the main themes

I still enjoy the main themes myself, but I'm sure I'll try out my own stuff eventually. Hopefully I'll have stuff to use by then...

My little list

Starting off, I have to second pretty much everything mentioned so far, except maybe One-Winged Angel. But that's a discussion for another time.

Starting in the "classic" vein, Cave Story. There is a nice variety of tracks here that all fit quite well with SK's feel. And it's freely available.
(Also, if you like Metriodvania/2d action platformers, do yourself a favor and click the download game link on that page. I'll wait.)

(Seriously, do it now.)

While extermely short, Blaster Master has some nice adventuring tunes in it. Jelly Helm is optional.

Next, there's Secret of Mana. Great Action-RPG, Best Boss Music. This on loop is required for at least run through of Jigsaw Valley/Aurora Isles.

Moving into (slightly) newer, There's Ragnarok Online. Lots of variation, good for normal areas but lacking in high-energy songs. Last I checked the game installed with a set of nicely tagged mp3s in a folder labeled as such.

Continuing down the list, there's Phantom Brave. Good pseudo-orchestral, heavy on the strings.

Parasite Eve is a good mid-range soundtrack with a more eletronic fell to it. A little bit for action, a good bit for exploration, a whole lot of reused motifs, but overall pretty good stuff.

Breaking away from all the RPGs, Einhander brings some good percussion for your diving pleasure. Switches between methodical beats and high speed regularly.

From planes to giant robots, the Armored Core series on the whole has some amazing tracks. In particular, the For Answer soundtrack has a strong set of battle tracks, and a few for when you are surrounded by just heat and crowns.
(I'd be doing a disservice to you all to bring up AC and not mention this. Link.

Dark Side of Phobos - Another great set of remixes, from Doom this time, for when you want something heavier. Link.)

And specifically for Candlelight Keep and those Graveyards, a little bit of Silent Hill. The soundtracks for 1-3 are among my favorites of all time. The original is mostly ambient, 2 tends towards eletronic drone, and 3 is more "normal." Also has some of the most terrifing boss music anywhere, but I"ll leave you to decide why.
Shadows of the Damned is quite similar, but with more action mixed in.

...That's probably good for now.

Some YT links

@Khamsin
I meant to say the Encounter theme, not Alert. My bad.

Anyways, here's what I've got:

MGS1 - Encounter (Danger rooms)

MGS1 - Mantis' Hymn (Early FSC)

Monster Hunter Freedom 1 - Desert Battle (Not sure of a specific instance, I just like the track)

Monster Hunter Freedom Unite - Teostra Battle (Vanaduke Fight, preferred)

Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker - Gannondorf Fight (Vanaduke Fight, alternate)

Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask - Deku Palace (Royal Jelly Palace floors)

Deadly Premonition - The Woods and the Goddess (Aurora Isles floors)

Deadly Premonition - Red Room (Poison theme floors, or any time you feel the need for some sexy saxophone)

Pokemon R/B/Y - Wild Battle (Party-button induced wave/s)

I'm sure I could come up with more, but this is what I've got so far.

+1 for Cave Story

I was gonna suggest Cave Story but Lostillusion beat me to it. There's another freeware game called Vega Strike, which has a lot of variety in its music. IMO it's worth the download just for that. If you're interested in a 3D flight game with missions ranging all the way from freight hauling to PMC combat stuff, then the game is probably worth looking at too. :D

Vega Strike website at: http://vegastrike.sourceforge.net/getfiles/

I think the Party Button fight music is too in-your-face and clashes hard with the ambient music in most levels, and also gets repetitive since those fights are all over the clockworks. If Three Rings would just replace that with the upbeat variants that already play in other parts of the level, and use the existing music much less often and somewhere it clashes less, the music would be perfect IMO. Sustaining high-intensity musical dramaticity just doesn't work, but slightly uptempo ambient music is much harder to overuse. I like the music that plays in Cravat Hall in particular, it makes me want to dance or something, but I'd also like battle music with a taste kinda like what plays here.

PPPPPP is a great, if small

PPPPPP is a great, if small soundtrack to play while exploring the clockworks. I find Pressure Cooker to be a pretty good substitute for boss music.

If you still have room for more music after going through everything that's already been offered you can head over to Overclocked Remix and go nuts. I'm currently in love with the "Reserve Tank: VARIAtions" album that centers around Metroid themes.

Yes to Cave Story though. Also, if you're looking for some other music, consider the mega man series.

Its not that One-winged Angel

Its not that One-winged Angel is bad..... its the fact its been overused constantly, and the bulk of Seph fans are either proto-emos or yaoi fan girls.... For a sane person, that stigma is hard to shake.

Anyway, I'm trying it with Boarderlands sound track, but the clockworks doesn't feel desolate enough, so it just seems off.....

I'm actually making a whole

I'm actually making a whole mod that directly changes the in-game music into OST's of Oldschool games, yet unfortunately I lack knowledge in that area and I replaced only 14/49 (2/7) of all the soundtracks. Example replacement: Haven background music ==> Wario Land 4 Monsoon Jungle. Fits so darn well.

Silence is golden

I play with the sound off. Nothing but a creaking keyboard and the occasional curse word.

...but since this is a suggestion thread and I'm a contrarion I'll suggest Modest Mouse.

I was digging around my archives and found the Metal Arms soundtrack..... unfortunately its the remix album they put out. I don't think they ever released the unmodified tracks from the game itself.

Anyway, I realized something odd. The whole time its playing, I was bothered by the fact that the Knight's running pace is a half step slower then Glitch's. It just seemed to throw the whole thing off.

You are right , I did love it at one point.

There was an internet radio station I listened to for about a year that focused exclusively on video game soundtracks. Thinking back, that's probably one of the reasons I have the collection I do now. On this station, there was a system in place where you could request specific tracks from their library, with a scoreboard of the most requested every month. One-Winged Angel was consistently the most requested track, 100 or so requests a month, with a 6-8 hour wait between repeat requests.

Every. Single. Month.

In other news, so much good music here, so little time.
And to contribute something less game-oriented, The Flaming Lips bring some nice energy and style.

Ok, sorry, no Bastion tracks in the post below...

Try listening to Grand Theft Auto's radio stations... my favorites are Flash FM, Chatterbox and Vice City Public Radio...

If I had a choice, I'd replace music from all levels with the Aurora Isles background music, including boss fights.

Late to the party

But not enough that this should be a bad bump, right? There's got to be more music choices from other people.

As for music, I occasionally found myself putting F-Zero on, but that's just because it's an ear bug. Get ouut.
This I would probably put up for the Aurora Isles, and this I guess would be my Munitions choice.
That's just old days talking though I guess.

What I want to do is set something like this to JK. The current Spiral Knights music just doesn't fit him, considering the music of his own area. He's a goofy boss.

Pulling this out of the grave, but I think will be worth it.

I stumbled across some epic fight music I think works the new Snarby battle, or just boss battles in general. The entire Power of Darkness album has a strong theatrical feel to it, and just "pops".
