s/he probably renamed some files or moved all the textures something, I wouldn't figure such a thing would work but hey, never know, I saw someone recolor their glacius pinkie pie colored, but the most important thing, is NEVER ever post here saying you did that. It won't appear to any other player that its different, only to you.
To answer your question though, pretty sure it is against TOS.
1. reproduce, distribute, publicly display or perform, translate, modify, adapt, create derivative works from, deconstruct, reverse engineer, decompile or disassemble in any manner Spiral Knights or any portion thereof, including but not limited to any character, graphic, associated software or proprietary communications protocol used by the software or any utilities, applications, emulators or tools derived therefrom;
Going inside the game files for any reason is grey area and you basically shouldn't tell anyone that you're doing it or enjoy a potential ban. I think Spiral Spy is as far as they're letting people go about such things.
Just keep it to yourself next time, if it weighs heavily on your conscience, then don't do it.

I'm not clicking a tinyurl link since it might be malicious.
In general, if you have to ask, it's probably against the rules. The rules essentially boil down to "don't be a jerk, don't be a thief, and don't exploit bugs or game flaws." It doesn't take a genius to follow them.
